We just won another war against them
Theyre getting pretty weak and will start falling apart, but like I wrote before, its been a sturdier state to really crack. They dont implode the way weak Muslim dynasties do if you kick down their door, and there's no good CB to recover it all easily. Even if they're sitting on De Jure land, the fact they're empire-tier means its impossible to get them back in one war.
Huh, thought I had written it in the OP but guess not. Game is overall vanilla beyond the graphical mods mentioned, but I also edited a few localizations (text entries). Like Imperator instead of Basilius; in no small part because I can never manage to write the latter form correctly from memory
Also Dux over Doux. It just feels more Roman to me. I don't speak any Greek but have basics in Latin, so it 'feels' better to my ear. Which is also why I have a tendency to give names to my in-game babies that make more sense in Latin than Greek. Hopefully this will feel increasingly plausible if/as the Empire marches westward
