This idea is inspired by Niall Fergusson's work 'Civilization: The West and the Rest.' Here's a TED talk on the general premise:

https://www.ted.com/talks/niall_ferguson_the_6_killer_apps_of_prosperity?language=en

I don't mean to start a discussion of the merits or flaws of his general thesis, but I do think the framework of his idea would be really useful for the game. (If it helps, think bsck to the Vicky2 system)

In place of the standard tech group modifiers, there would be 6 traditional/modernized attributes that everyone would have (for ease, the tech groups could be used simply to manage where esch country fits on traditional/modernized). Those countries that are in the 'Western' group at present are those for which all those attributes are 'Modernized,' while the other current tech groups have one or more attributes set to 'Traditional.' Each 'Traditional' attribute will carry with it some penalty.

These attributes don't have to line up to Fergusson's own set, if only because his list sounds largely like it would all be Admin relsted (which, in all fairness, does make sense, but isn't as compellingn for gameplay). So, two each for admin, diplo, and mil. Whatever they're called, each would have a distinct penalty for being 'traditional.'

So, for example, say there is a 'legalism' attribute taking up one of the admin slots. That will, in addition to a modest tech penalty, also give you a corruption penalty. A 'commercialism' attribute would provide, in addition to the standard tech penalty, trade penalties. (Both of these are just demonstrations of the concept)

The tech groups would still exist, simply as a way to designate what attributes countries start with, and their base unit type.

Thoughts?

If they really got their idea for the current dev diary here, they really acted fast. Although I must admit, the proposed system is very similar to what they just announced.

They did say the next expansion won't be out for quite awhile, so we'll just have to wait and see what the end result is.

I imagine quite polished. If they're releasing DD's about what looks to be like a pretty complete feature already months ahead of time, then they'll have plenty of time to tweak it. On another note, congrats!

Thanks. They did say that it was going to be a very large expansion, so I would not be surprised if this was not the only feature that received a major re-work. They did say recently that they really want to take a long look at how culture is represented.

Well, as they've already broken up most of the cultures and changed conversion, I guess all that's left is Acceptance?

Personally, though, I'm hoping for an overhaul/revision to warfare. Despite the fact that the game almost runs on it, it hasn't gotten much attention since 1.12.

You seem like a guy that always have pretty well thought-out design ideas. How would you change warfare?

  • Reduce Fort Cost and Maintenance but increase them multiplicatively (100/0.5 -> 200/1.0 -> 400/2.0 -> 800/4.0 instead of the 200/2.0 additive cost - get rid of the AI cheat)
  • Have Mil Tech Increase Siege Ability
  • Increase cost of Artillery, add in a 'insufficient support' modifier for Artillery complete with Art/Inf ratios, give Cavalry the ability to flank the back line in battle
  • Have Forts increase attrition/attrition cap in the provinces they're built in, make it so that the owner always gets Defensive terrain bonuses and get rid of MP cost on sallies
  • Change the mercenary pool formula to be 5 + 1/5 of your forcelimit
  • Simplify and Clarify ZoC
  • Forts provide -1 Unrest in every province in their ZoC (give something more to Courthouses in compensation)
  • Change the dev requisite for +1 AT from 1 Fort every 50 development to 1 Fort per 75 development
