I never had this problem. I know its a straight forward install but you have to go into the text.csv file (I believe) and change a tag to the Byzantine Empire. General Suvorov would be the best person to ask. Maybe he could help out if he sees this.

As for Screens I have them on my site, I will give the links tonight for a screen or two.

August 17th, 1549

Russia ends its war with the Golden Horde by receiving 52,000 ducats and the province of Saratow. With this victory over the horde, it would be safe to say that Russia will eventually absorb its former master.

October 3rd

Banat and Angora rise in revolt. Detachments are sent to these provinces to deal with the problem.

January 1st, 1550

Hessen becomes the first Protestant state to embrace the Reformed faith.

February 5th

Colonel Bonde successfully eliminates the rebel threat in Angora, and orders are given that he is to remain in the area.

May 25th

After several months in rebel hands the province of Banat is once again free of rebel scum. General Prinz is ordered to remain in the area.

December 15th

Angora rises in revolt but Bonde is there to quickly end the threat.

September 1st, 1551

Croatia rises in revolt once again. The assembly has approved a measure for raising forces to better subjugate the occupied Hungarian provinces and curtail all rebel activities.

September 30th

General Prinz routes the rebels in Croatia and is ordered to return to Banat.

October 1st

Banat rises in revolt once again.

January 1, 1552

The Palintat moves to the reformed faith.
January 2nd

Russian diplomats are greeted in Byzantium. After a few days of formals we decide we should renew ties with our old ally and accept their proposal for a royal marriage.

May 4th

Due to our aggressive trade tactics in the Flemish trade center of Flanders. The Spanish crown has levied a Trade Embargo against our empire. Spain immediately goes about the process of clearing out our merchants. The assembly was quite upset with this turn of events, but unfortunately we reach the consensus that we can do nothing at the moment.

September 22nd

Prinz is forced to put down another revolt in Banat.

January 1st, 1553

England embraces the Reformed teachings of John Calvin.

May 1st

Naples declares its independence from Spain. It has been nearly 8 years since they agreed to become part of the Spanish crown and now the people of Napoli storming into the streets have once again saw fit to rule themselves. I smile to myself at the news as God has seen fit to punish Spain for its transgressions against Byzantium.

July 15th

Colonel Stenbock successfully put down a small uprising in Bessarabia.

October 10th

Prinz demolishes another rebel rabble, but loses control of the town in the process. He is given the order to siege the town and starve out the rebel incumbents.

November 27th

The merchants of Bujak fund a naval equipment yard. (Random event Naval Yard in Bujak)

April 2nd, 1554

In an effort to curtail aggressive Turkish trade policies we have closed the market of Byzantium to all Turkish traders. The decision could bring war but we feel fairly confident that Turkey simply lacks all ability to wage war against without the help of some big allies.

April 23rd

France (Scotland, Savoy, and Spain) declares war on England.

November 1st

Banat revolts again. Soon I believe there will be no one left alive in Banat to raise a hand against the empire.

December 1st

Our traders bring us news of large revolts in the Spanish Netherlands. It would appear the people of that region are sick of Spanish rule. Perhaps another peace of the Spanish empire will breakaway.

February 16th

Bonde crushes another revolt in Angora with relatively low casualties.

March 1st

Secret meeting between Assembly members has given our empire a new direction. The first action of this new policy is to send a small gift to the King of Poland.

March 14th

Russia (Sweden, Denmark, and Pskov) has declared war on The Golden Horde (Poland, and Astrakhan). In a move to annex the horde the Russians have thrown themselves against the Polish juggernaut. Perhaps it is more then their alliance can handle…

June 25th

Our forces in Banat have successfully starved out the rebels whom surrender the city and are later executed for their troubles.

In world news two major events have occurred in the war to the north. Russia announces that they have annexed the Golden Horde, but also admit the loss of Pskov, which was annexed by Poland.

May 5th, 1556

Russia with three of its provinces under siege wisely pays off Poland.

August 19th

Klingspor is forced to put down a small rebellion in Podolia.

October 2nd

Ferdinand I is elected the Holy Roman Emperor.

October 26th

After heavy casualties Bonde is able to put down another revolt in Angora. We immediately pass a bill to levy more troops for the continued defense of Angora.

December 27th

Strong fiscal management sees us cut inflation by 33 percent. (Random Event: Deflation)

Byzantium spent the last few years consolidating is holdings in Hungary, Poland, and Turkey. The army was enlarged considerable and the treasury has grown to allow for contingency plans.

With Poland annexing Pskov and forcing Russia to peace, she has turned her attention west where the Danes are being sorely beaten. Although our alliance is strong we elect to allow Poland to warmonger hoping the rest of the world will frown upon their actions. Then if war should come to Poland from our alliance perhaps the world will look more favorably upon it.

For the time being the council has agreed the most profitable expansion would lie to the South. Our armies honed from years of fighting Turkish rebels stand ready…

Nice chunk of real estate. Justinian would be proud, though Justinian would be secretly whispering: Italy! Go for Italy!

Ah perhaps Lord Durham, but then he would have to go against your papal cohorts... Not that the men of the cloth have much in the way of spines. :D

Beside my good friend the Doge has been whining that Italy should be rightfully his.

Hmmm. You've met my men of the cloth obviously. Why do you think I use mercenaries :D . Perhaps kicking heathen butt is the way to go after all.

You know, I would love to see a version of EU cover off the medieval portion of history. Running the Byzantine Empire through it's proper time line would really make my day!

Anyway, yours is the next best thing. Keep up the good work!

The War of Folly (Jan 1557 - Aug 1560)

January 1st, 1557

Helvetia becomes a reformed state.

March 15th

Bonde is forced to put down another revolt in Hungary. I don’t know how the army feels but I am really tired of these bitter Hungarians. People should know when they’re conquered.

March 21st

England gets soundly thrashed by France and is forced to pay 250,000 ducats and cede Kent and Lancashire for peace.

March 8th, 1558

Banat revolts yet again and this time they take the town. Bonde moves into position for another long siege.

May 1st

Military engineers have informed us they have been able to successfully use Matchlok’s. I have no idea what those are. (Land Tech Level 10 Matchloks)

August 7th

The politics of Europe are strange indeed. For example want to pick a fight with Crimea? How about declaring war on Turkey. Of course that is what the assembly voted to do, and sure enough Crimea comes to Turkey’s aid getting the fight we want and having Casus Belli in the process.

September 28th

Our valiant Thracian 1st army soundly thrashes the vile Crimeans and their 28,000 host in Crimea.

November 25th

Byzantine disdain for Crimeans runs deep and with a strong Georgia core in our northern army we forgo the siege and assault the walls of their capital. On this day our army stands victorious and after a long wait the Georgians begin to taste vengeance.

January 26th, 1559

Our main host along with another smaller supporting army are caught on the march and forced to beat another Crimean host of some 20,000. The Crimeans were said to have fought bravely but collapsed under the heavy artillery barrage and were forced to retreat.

February 25th

Our main host lays siege to Azow.

March 13th

Our secondary unit breaks off and lays siege to Kaffa.

August 18th

Persia receives indemnities from Turkey. Perhaps it is time the empire devoted a little attention to our ancient heathen enemy to the south.

December 28th

Azow falls to our host and the defenders are put to the sword. Our officer in the field sends word that a Crimean ambassador has met him in Azow and offered that province in return for peace. We regretfully decline, as Crimea is all but down and out.

January 1st, 1560

The City of London has become a center of trade due to the English merchants demand for a friendly trade center for the countries growing colonial holdings. As that has been announced the nation of Scotland has declared itself a reformed state.

January 29th

Our army has moved out from Azow and has besieged the Crimean province of Kerch. Regretfully our officers report that the land is harsh and attrition is high. Although the Crimeans can no longer offer any resistance, our army has stretched itself too thin, we may have to end the war, much to the dismay of our Georgian cousins.

February 12th

We have mobilized the Athenian garrison and brought her south to Bursa where we once again lay siege to the Ottoman capital.

March 30th

The province of Kerch falls to our army. We are now ready to deal with the Crimeans.

May 14th

Bursa falls to our armies again. No Ottoman province in the Asia Minor remains free, we will have to move into the Mediterranean if we wish to seize any more holdings.

August 14th

The Crimean province of Kaffa falls. The Crimeans immediately offer Azow, Kaffa, and Kerch for peace. We really could not expect a better offer if we made it ourselves so we accept their peace proposal. Much to the chagrin of the exiled Georgian Monarch. His pride will have to wait as circumstances allow. We are not done with Crimean not by a long shot….

The Crimean war will be known to the Crimean people as the War of Folly. In declaring support for their ally they fell right into a Byzantine trap, becoming the big loser of the war. With Crimea out we can turn our attention south to the Turks and what remains of their country.

The assembly met with military advisors and hammered out a plan that would insure Byzantium would get the choice pieces of the Ottoman Empire over our allies. Although Persia will take more of Turkey then we would have liked, most would agree we would rather have the Persians as neighbors.

As the orders are given our fleet stands ready in the harbor and our army boards. Word brings news that secret orders have come from the internal council. Such orders that not even a Senator such as myself is made privy.

The Byzantine fleet stands ready for what I guess would be Turkish Occupied Cyprus, but rumors from sailors has the fleet heading for Italy for some campaign planned by the Doge in Venice. Regardless of the destination I am sure God will stand with us in what could be our finest hour.

The Time of Peace and The Subjugation of Hungary 1560 - 1568

August 28th

Industrial development leads to a new refinery in Moldavia. (Random event)

January 1st, 1561

With the army fully mobilized and prepared to board our navy in Byzantium the head council approves a peace with Turkey in which they surrender their entire treasury. Although victorious I can’t help but feel unsatisfied with our latest victory.

January 1, 1562

The council approves the drafting of some 25,000 footmen in various parts of the empire.

August 1st

Angora revolts and is put down on the 13th.

September 22nd

The assembly approves our empires 1st attempt in colonization by sending 100 souls to Karoo in South Africa.

February 4th, 1563

Russia (Sweden, and Denmark) declares war on the Khanate of Astrakhan. Poland not to be outdone declares in favor of Astrakhan and attacks Russia.

March 12th

We are sent word of our successful colonization of the Karoo, which prompts the assembly to fund another colonization attempt of the area.

July 27th

With the empire enjoying a prolonged peace backed by a strong economy the capital is reaping the rewards of increased trade. (Random event: Good Policies +1 Stability, 1000 in trade in infrastructure which leads to the advancement to trade level 5)

September 4th

South Africa seems to agree with Byzantines as our second group of colonists arrives, and sends word requesting more souls to further enlarge the colony and gain more control of the surrounding lands. The assembly approves the measure and another group of colonists is sent out.

December 30th

After nearly three years of absolute peace in the Balkans, a lone Mameluk ambassador arrives in Byzantium seeking audience with the council. Relationships between Byzantium and Cairo have been deteriorating over the past few decades to the point where many councilors question the need for the Mameluks in our alliance. Needless to say the man was admitted in the assemblies presence so that he may be heard.

He brought word of a war to the far south in which the Caliph had declared war on The Hafsids and Nubia. The man was sent away while the council discussed a course of action. Austria sent word they will not support the war and pulls out of the alliance. Our diplomats immediately headed for Vienna to bring Austria back into the fold.

With news of Venice and Persia entering the war we had no choice but to support the war, but we will make certain that Byzantium will take no part in fighting it.

February 9th

By the Grace of the good lord our third group of colonists arrive in Karoo. Plans are made to send another group at the soonest possibility.

May 1st

The polish province of Podolia revolts.

July 27th

Maximillian II is elected the Holy Roman Emperor.

August 5th

With an alliance already cemented. Austria and our glorious empire agree to a royal marriage to further strengthen the ties between the Free Peoples of the Second Rome and the Holy Roman Emperor. May we stand together for a thousand years!

November 21st

Our allies the Mameluks annex the Hafsids. How they must beam with pride at their latest conquests not knowing they only exist by the might and will of the Byzantine Empire.

June 1st, 1565

Podolia revolts again.

October 1st
The Crimean province of Azow revolts. Why I can’t know as I cannot understand a peasants desire to be ruled by inbred barbaric khans rather then the elected assembly of Byzantium the center of civilization.

October 13th

Russia is humbled, as they must cede Samara to Astrakhan for peace. Once again Poland successfully prevents Russia’s ability to expand south.

November 1st

Bessarabia revolts, but the rebels are put down on the 10th.

Jan 1, 1566

The Council of Trent is held.

February 1st

On the heels of the Council of Trent the assembly declares war on the Kingdom of Hungary with the goal of complete and total submission to the might and will of God and Byzantium.

April 13th

Lay siege to the province of Croatia.

May 2nd

Austria lays siege to the province of Carpathia.

May 14th

Our forces and the Venetians arrive at the walls of Beograd, and a dispute begins over who should control the siege. The argument is settled by the council which orders the siege abandoned and for our army to head north from Serbia into Maros.

July 14th

The garrison of Croatia surrenders and our army sets off north to Pest.

September 2nd

The province of Maros falls to our forces.

September 23rd

The province of Carpathia surrenders to Austria.

November 4th

We lay siege to the province of Transylvania.

January 23rd, 1567

Our forces from Moldavia are mobilized and lay siege to the fortress in Ruthenia.

June 3rd

The province of Pest surrenders to our forces.

August 19th

We lay siege to the capital in Magyar.

September 11th

Serbia falls to a combined force of Austrians and Venetians with the Austrian general claiming the town for his emperor.

April 9th, 1568

The province of Ruthenia falls to our forces. Only the capital stands between us and victory and word is sent that her walls will soon crack under our barrage and as our troops storm the fortress their nobles will know what has always been known to us as they will finally bend knee and acknowledge the will of Byzantium.

September 22nd

The valiant defenders of Magyar fought bravely but were no match for the soldiers of God. In the treaty the Hungarian King was made to surrender his crown, his capital, and his country, which would forever more remain a part of the Byzantine Empire.

The treaty was finally ratified and signed on the 25th and Hungary at long last became a part of Byzantium.

With the signing of that peace treaty Byzantium had become more secure then it had ever been. With a weakened Turkey posing no threat in the South our armies and defenses could be concentrated to the north against the mighty Kingdom of Poland.

The assembly had agreed that our cold, barren, northern provinces would pose a great obstacle for Polish generals who would be forced to endure heavy casualties in hopes of gaining the strategic provinces. It was our hope that they would suffer too many casualties and render themselves at our mercy. Of course that may be wishful thinking on our part, as Poland has been known to pull a surprise or two.

The 3rd Punic (Turkish) War (1568 - 1583)

January 1st, 1569

With Hungary crushed under the weight of our “Balkan” alliance the empire has few enemies to concern herself with these days. The assembly passes bills to increase military spending and increase our military presence in the Kingdom of Hungary to quickly quash any peasant uprisings. The assembly also declares measures to improve our empires trade and infrastructure so that we may be able to support our vast empire.

With extra money diverted to economic development the empire prospers.

August 16th, 1572

Merchants and civic officers complain of Turkish spies infiltrating our provinces in the Asia Minor. The assembly will convene to discuss the Turkish issue. I believe that Byzantine prejudice is the main driving force behind these stories as Turkey has not been a force for quite some time and although they have no reason to love us. I highly doubt they would attempt anything to give us reason to wish their extinction…

September 23rd

The assembly votes to declare war with Turkey and finish them once and for all. The 1st Byzantine army marches out of the gates of Byzantium and heads for the walls of Bursa.

The rebels in Azow also rout the garrison sent in from Kerch.

August 21st

May our glorious empire last another thousand years!

After nearly a century of successful campaigns against the Ottomans we have finally eradicated their presence and although any Byzantine should be proud of the result I can’t help but feel we were some how wrong in the way it was orchestrated. In an empire that prides itself in civility have we sunk so low that we are to become Pariahs?

The Byzantine Empire in 1581
