Whilst I wouldn't really agree with him, there's a difference between the 2. Britain kept its 'unwilling prisoners' as you put it out of Westminster. Only the United Kingdom itself voted for the Government, and therefore Kenyans, Indians or other such people were kept from exercising political influence to such a degree as they might have.

A Russian Conmon would struggle to justify the denial of parliamentary representation to areas such as Finland, the Baltic states or other areas, and as such would face a bigger problem.

why?

As an aside, I realize that my post may be misconstrued. I am in no way criticizing separatists. In fact, I think the British Empire was quite the despicable organisation.

(2 What would happen if Margaret Thatcher lost to James Callaghan in the 1979 UK Election?

(3 What would happen if Mehmet Ali Ağca and John Hinkley Jr succeeded in Assassinating John Paul II and Ronald Reagan?

(5 What would happen if the august 1991 coup in the Soviet Union was successful?

(6 What would happen if the Tienanmen square wasn't crushed by troops and protesters were allowed to peacefully continue?

(7 What would happen if the Maastricht treaty didn't have as part of it, the creation of the Euro?

(8 What would happen if Yeltsin chose someone else other than Putin as his prime minister in 1999?

I know this is over 1000 years ago, but I find it pretty interesting:

What if Maurice had handled the revolt that led to his death better, i.e. not caused the soldiers to fully mutiny? The war with Persia that followed left both empires open to outside attacks (most notably the Muslims, but also others), so without his premature death Islam may never have spread north and west like it did.

Tsar Nicholas allows himself to become a constitutional monarch in 1905. Russia is more efficient during WWI, so German advances aren't as quick/large as real life, and it never pulls out due to revolution. This means that Brest_Litovsk wouldn't have happened, and Germany wouldnt control E. Europe. Therefore, when Germany is defeated (Probably sooner than irl) Countries in E. Europe under Russia remain under Russia.

Can't think what would happen next but, no cold war!

This is totally wrong, monarchs nor parliaments don´t have such power. They aren´t gods.

Catherine the Great, which was much more smart and beloved didn´t dare to touch serfdom. Even being a powerful autocrat, she just couldn´t bring such massive change. To think a russian parliament, a construct of people with many different POVs, could change a country so fast is absurd. Russia would be in bad shape in 1914 - maybe even worse shape.

Without question, the biggest and most easily imaginable change would be a global nuclear exchange between the USA and the USSR in the latter days of the Cold War.

No successful persecution of christians by dioceltian , defeat of muslims in yarmouk, persian victory in salamis etc would have been far bigger changes.

OP asked to limit example to the last 1000 years.

A major PoD would be that China would continue its exploration after Zheng He's expeditions.

A large change within these 1000 years would be ottomans not taking constantinople .This would have made the need to find sea routes to india and china nonexistent and the age of discovery would not have occured and renaissance would not have started as byzantine scholars wouldnt have migrated to italy and the west.

What has Constantinople to do with those trade routes? If the Ottomans would not take Greece but still conquer the eastern Mediterranean area, the situation would be the same regarding trade routes.

Even if the Ottoman empire would fall in 1453, there would still be a need to find alternative trade routes. The problem was that the routes made the trade products very expensive at the end of the line, due to the many hands it passed through. The Ottoman empire (or lack thereof) didn't change that fact.

The Ottomans would still have Greece and the Balkans though, I think trade would still be very difficult. Constantinople would be surrounded and virtually under blockade the whole time.

the OP was about the last 1000 years.

and all those things are arguably window dressing compared to the devastation of a global thermonuclear war.
