Ever tried a Staatlicher Hofkeller wine ? But let the frenchies believe they still do the best wines.... Oh for sure maybe 0.1% of their wine growers are really good but the others.... mostly do pee like wines and they believe that because they stamp it 'made in France' it will turn their vinegars into ambrosia...

But back to the OT. there will be such event as you can claim a part of Poland back into the Reich.

I am from the german side of this particular border region (Alsace/Pfalz). I think we live well together and I never felt that I offended a person from Alsace by calling it Elsass. In fact if they still speak their dialect they will call it that. Their language or dialect is more German than French. However people from Northern Germany will not understand anything. We in Palatina however understand them well. Both our dialects are a mixture of French and German as my region used to be French as well. In Alsace they call it Flammkueche and not tarte flambée for example. So the French person that tells us to call it by its "right" name is clearly not from there and states just his national pride and knows little about the people there and their tradition.
The most palatable wine comes from Palatina. The name implies this!

I do think it was a bit of misplaced nationalist pride, but it's weird to refer *in English* to a French region by its German name. Of course if you're speaking German you're going to say Elsaß. Just like most people speaking French would say Rhénanie-Palatinat and not Rheinland-Pfalz, but in English I would either say Rheinland-Pfalz or Rheinland-Palatinate.

I personally disliked that post, not because I disagree that it's French, but because: is this even something to make a fuss about? Not all people are English and not all call cities/states/countries the same. It doesn't have to mean anything other than that.

Gamewise: I hope that you can have dynamic names like, that names change based upon who controls it. Or choose if you wan't to or not. If playing USA I would prefer English names for instance, so I would not turn on dynamic names. If playing Italy or Germany, I would like to turn on such a feature.

Or even better: If you could rename cities/provinces/states right form in the game. You could name them whatever you feel like at the moment.

What the hell. Is there really a fight to know what is the "real" name of Alsace-Lorraine ? Germans will say Elsaß-Lothringen and French will say Alsace-Lorraine, it's just a question of translation. And other people can say whatever they want. (Even if Alsace-Lorraine would be more accurate since it's French ).

However, seriously, I think Germany should have those claims. I don't know if the Germans felt as angry about Alsace-Lorraine as the French were after the german annexation in 1870, but they should have claims anyway !

Not the same at all. This is an English language forum, and the accepted anglicisation is Rome etc. And it doesn't imply anything. But the use of the German name in the context of Alsace-Lorraine seems to be used by some people who want to make a political point.

As for the the question whether the Elsass is Deutsch or the Alsace is french...
Well, it is neither.
The region is the classical border region and also suffered the classical fate of a border region:
Changing hands again and again, bleeding for both sides and finally being forcefully assimilated into one or the other.

It probably would have been a better idea to actually let Elsass-Lothringen keep its independence after WW1 and act as buffer between Germany and France.

The various lorraine dialects are West-Germanic, not Romanic though, so at least in regards to the language Alsatians and Lotharinger are much more German than French.

Long and complicated history when you live on a border!

People in the region were regarded as Germans after May 1940, and therefore forced to serve in the German Army, against their will (therefore their name in French, "Malgré nous"). Notably in the Waffen SS.
