Well I am French and I don't feel offended when I hear/read "Elsaß-Lothringen". I am, however, when I have to read things like "we french people are [...]". Ugh.

I guess those people rather disagreed with your statement that the French name was the "correct" one.
"Correct" is a really strange word to use in a multi-language forum...
As long as people know what you are talking about, why bother for this PC-nonsense? Just so some purists don't get offended

If the advice was: "this is an English-speaking forum, please use English place names" I think no-one could disagree with this statement.
Anyway, this is far off-topic. The topic is "should be Alsace-Lorraine (please, note that I'm writing it in English, not in French
) a starting core state of Germany (a.k.a. Deutschland,um Deutsch zu nicht beleidigen)?". I think that it would be more historically correct if it is not on 1/1/1936, with a choice to claim the region after the re-occupation of the Rhineland.

But the use of the German name in the context of Alsace-Lorraine seems to be used by some people who want to make a political point.

Germans never annexed it in WW2 so shouldn't have cores. Both the French and Germans have always conceded to a certain level of local autonomy hence it's name in English. It's Alsatian not French or German!

Not formally, as no Peace treaty was ever signed.
However, the area was incorporated into Germany and the people living there were made German Citizens.

Hmmm allways thot it was Alsacia-Lorena ...maybe i was wrong.... but i think we all refer to the same geographic area. So start kissing and hugging each other now
Elsaß-Lothringen is a valid name too.... And I'm not sure that every people living now in the said Alsace / lorraine if they had the choice would not want to be part of Germany instead of the ruined France.

Can we give it back to Germany? It's full of racist people. Same reason we should give Nice back to Italy. Also, Alsace-Lorraine is the only part of France without separation of church and state.

Strictly speaking, the name is a in fact a bit confusing. Because Germany never annexed nor claimed the whole of Lorraine/Lothringen. I currently live in Nancy, which is the capital city of modern days Lorraine, and I can tell Nancy never was a part of the german Reich, it remained french even after 1871 (see this : https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fe/Elsass-Lothringen_1648-1789.jpg?uselang=fr ). A more exact name for the annexed territory, specificaly for the 1940 period, would be Alsace-Moselle, Moselle being the northern part of Lorraine, where until now a significant part of the elders still speaks its own kind of german. And they all have this funny accent. As for France being ruined, surely it's not anywhere close to heaven, but still, it's not anywhere close to hell either, there's a whole lot of shittier places in the world, I suppose. Even in America.

As for the claim debate I'm not an expert on the subject but I think that while it made sense in the 19th century because lots of people still spoke german dialect in this region, it became way more french in the 20th. Although it probably make sense gameplay wise.

Oi! Try our wine from Frankonia, or from the Mosel-area. It doesn't need to shy away from comparison to the wines from sunny France!
i think there should be a National Focus for a Claim on El'zas-Lotaringiya (russkiy language - best language) called something like "Reclaim the Reichsland"
I am from the german side of this particular border region (Alsace/Pfalz). I think we live well together and I never felt that I offended a person from Alsace by calling it Elsass. In fact if they still speak their dialect they will call it that. Their language or dialect is more German than French. However people from Northern Germany will not understand anything. We in Palatina however understand them well. Both our dialects are a mixture of French and German as my region used to be French as well. In Alsace they call it Flammkueche and not tarte flambée for example. So the French person that tells us to call it by its "right" name is clearly not from there and states just his national pride and knows little about the people there and their tradition.
