Right so im trying out the Pacifist Ethos to see how it plays out. However, im literally 10 years into the game and apparently, as my fist colony ship was so kind to inform me of, nearly the ENTIRE POPULACE of my homeworld decided to just abandon the Fanatic Pacifist Ethos.

This was my starting Ethos/Government.

THIS is what has happened in the 10 years in game start.

And THIS is all that remains of my starting ethos:

Clearly fading FAST as you can tell.

So this is NOT the first time i have noticed this happening, i have in other games seen my populace in a few games slightly abandon my entire ethos on my HW/new colonies but literally i just lost my ENTIRE set of benefits for picking these traits at species creation within 10 years of game start. What was the point of picking it then if it CLEARLY doesn't matter?

Oh and another thing, it is going to take me nearly 60 years to get all of these pops another Ethos in the mild category. So yeah thanks for gimping me RIGHT out of the f*****ing starting gate game.

Interesting, because you're not the first person to state that their pops ethics on their homeworld completely changed within 10 years. Could be a bug

Ya ethic divergence is a pain in the ass, that's why I always play people who can purge, so I can just get rid of the undesireables.

If you're playing a happiness focused race then note the -10/-20% ethics divergence from happiness does not apply to growing pops. So if you get something like encourage free thought all your growing pops diverge in ethos on your homeworld.

This happened in my game as well and totally put me off from playing happiness based ethos. Slavery and cruelty is what paradox demands from you!

Maybe you should pick a non-pants-on-head government, like Theocratic Oligarchy.

No ethics divergence then.

I suspect your complaint is less "This is a bug that needs fixing" and more "I don't understand what the pros and cons of government types are"

Also, edicts and policies need to be constantly governed lest your empire turns into anarchy. The real problems start when you don't use sectors and don't allow for migration or forced resettlement and at the same time can't purge. It's less than fun to have multiple diverging ethics on the same large important planet and being out of influence to remedy the situation.

Ethic divergence seems to be working properly in the Clarke beta patch.

To the OP: I am convinced there is a bug in the 1.0.* builds which cause homeworld POPs to spontaneously lose one of their ethics despite having negative divergence. I encountered this the other day when I started a game with a friend of mine.

That's not intended behavior.

I never use edicts or policies, don't allow for migration, don't use forced resettlement, and never purge. Not even ghost pops.
And everything is fine. There are no "situations" to remedy.
I am loath to dismiss your problem with a "Git gud", here, but I don't really see that I have any other option.

Then you're gimping yourself a bit. Plus, he's right, managing planetary edicts is easily one of the worst aspects of this game. No central location to see them, no notifications when they end...a real problem if your plan depends on them.

I have some pops that don't have Ethic...
I'm not sure what they believe in.

For now I'm playing as a "Fanatic Materialist + Individualist" with "Plutocratic Oligarchy" government, ethic divergence is not a big deal as long my pops are not "Fanatic Spiritualist", "Fanatic Collectivist" & "Fanatic Xenophobe" happiness can be maintain.

But for other government type with different ethos ethic divergence is a big deal.

The question is not whether it can be managed or not but whether the mechanic works as advertised in game or not.
Game says: negative value, no divergence (or even convergence). If that's not what happens, it is an issue regardless of whether you have a problem with it or not.

And just as an aside, I've run Theocratic oligarchy/collectivist building games and still had divergence happen.

Yep, I still got the same issue running on the beta patch.

Depends on your playstyle and government/racial picks I'd say. If you can keep your pops happy or avoid divergence in planets (between planets is manageable) then you're usually in the green. This particular issue tho seems to be a bug and also kinda confirmed by PDS but at loss to why.

There's a bug where some or all of your pops can spawn at the start of the game without your ethics (or with only some of them), it probably happened here and you just didn't realise. I've had the same experience myself, it's a real pain if you don't notice it right away and restart.

It's apparently fixed in the current beta patch, but you may want to restart anyway if you don't want to deal with drifting them back to the correct ethics.

Having a positive ethics divergence does NOT mean POPs will not diverge... it just means they will "tend" to diverge towards your empires main ethics. I also think they diverge a bit less if positive though.

I also think there is a bug when POPs only have one point if ethos.... I thought they were only suppose to have between 2-4 points at any given time. But it might be that in rare cases they can be at 1 and/or 5 points.

So... the fact that people diverge is intended and the positive or negative value basically dictate if they more likely gravitate toward your empire ethics or not.

If you want to keep slaves on a planet you better allow migration or resettle people if they loose their ethos that tolerate slavery.

While there might still be a bug I really like how this work... I don't want all my POP to be all alike, I want factions to form and I want problems so I can fix them.

What is annoying me the most is that POP ethos can't be readily seen unless you CLICK on them on the planet view.... it is ridiculously difficult to manage POPs on planets currently. I also want a feature that automatically shift POPs in my own controlled planets into the best position. I want fanatic materialist to manage my labs, fanatic individualist to head the corporate wing and so on... why should I even have to bother about these things?!?

Paradox... please give us the option to see POP ethos directly on the planetary view and allow us to have AI automatically put POPs in the correct location. Ethos changes without us noticing so go visit planets every other year to reassign POPs get old VERY quick!!!
