So I'm playing as the Papal State and I forged a claim on Provence. Before I was able to siege it,my ally Milan was and now they have completed the siege.I can't negotiate to gain control of Provence now. What should I do?I am thinking of making them my vassal but I'm not sure.

You're omitting a number of rather important details. Are you and Milan in the same war against Provence? If so, who is the WL--you, Milan or someone else? Since they didn't hand over control to the WL it seems they have a claim, unless they are the WL, in which case there's not much you can do to get that province. Vassalizing Provence outright would let them keep it under your leadership, though. Alternatively you can drag the war out and prevent Milan from getting enough WS to grab the province in a separate peace. They'll eventually peace out and you can grab it yourself.

Edit: Nm, that probably won't work.

Don't call them in next time when you know they have a claim or core on the province. Or when your troops will arrive later than the troops of Milan.

I suggest you wait a few years, Milan will peace out eventually.

Or you can tag change to Milan and make them sign a worhtless peace so your troops can siege Provence next.

Milanese tag is MLO.
Provence tag would be PRO are something like it.

If you're still small, vassalizing them might be the better call anyway IMO. Is your FL/manpower/gold enough to handle Provencal rebels?

EDIT: Huh, I remembered Provence being 12 BT for some reason. I guess it's only 9. That's not so bad.

Thanks for the tips.I do not own the art of war dlc, thus I don't even know about some of the things you're talking about.Secondly, yeah we are in the same war with Milan and they have a claim on Provence as well.

I can't tag change as I'm playing on Ironman mode and I had to call them in because I was too weak to fight Hungary.

If you're still small, vassalizing them might be the better call anyway IMO. Is your FL/manpower/gold enough to handle Provencal rebels?

I am still small and I will vassalize them.

That's the problem with not-having DLC.

Back in 1.7 AI was coded in a way he give up the siege if he is not interested. In 1.8. They recoded it so AI will siege and transfer the occupation if he doesn't want a province. But it can't transfer if you don't have DLC!

Without DLC it is much harder to get the needed control of the province. One trick is to get to he province, detach siege, set your non-army to "Attach to this unit" and o to neighboring province. Sometimes Allies will attach, go with you and give you the siege.

Also if Provence hadn't move their capital you will not be able to vassalise them (in a peace treaty you can demand vassalisation with Milan as liege).

Had the same thing with France when I attacked Flanders (which I had released from Burgundy) as Utrecht. Apparently France will keep the provinces in the low lands because they want them, even if they don't have a claim. The AI will only hand over a besieged province if they don't want it themself, they don't even need to have a core or claim apparently. Problem is that if they have the capital you can't even vassalize them, because they will become a vassal of Milan instead of a vassal of you, which is even worse. Be carefull with the negotiations to look if they aren't becoming their vassal, because it made me ragequit my game as Utrecht like 15 min ago, because I gave them as a vassal to France by accident... I really hate this game sometimes.

Wait for them to peace out if making them your vassal isn't an option. Or perhaps just DoW Milan eventually, that might not even be that big of a problem. I gave my vassal to France by accident, so that made it impossible to take it in the next 100 years.. Perhaps with carefull planning, making alliances and waiting for the right time... Still I don't want to have to fight France over something that should have been mine...

Anyway... I know your pain, just curse at the game and hate it and then try to live with it or quit as I did... Start over and make sure to not make this mistake ever again XD

I'm not sure about what you're saying. Back in 1.7 and before, you just couldn't transfer the occupation of a province, and neither could your allies. Or at least I've never seen it done by my allies even if it would have been very useful sometimes, and I've never seen a way to do it. Or am I completely wrong ?

Edit : ok, sorry, I did not understand what you were saying correcly. For 1.8 you are certainly right, in 1.7 the problem would be how would the AI define "not interested in the province". Sometimes it was just a pain in the ass. Although I think PI should have included the "transfer province" in the free section of the patch.
