Ally claims to be "Already called..."

Hi,

I was declared war on, and hoped my ally would help, but the option to call ally is blocked out with the message "Already called to one of the active wars".

My ally wasn't at war with anyone, nor did he have a truce with the nation who declared war on me.

So what the hell does that mean?

if you were declared on they should already be in your defensive war unless they refused the CTA in which case they would no longer be your ally.

Unless they are also allied to your enemy and in a war with them against someone else. This is a common way to get around defensive alliances. IE as someone allied to the Ottomans, Decalre a war on Mamlukes call them in, then declare a seperate war on Crimea (their ally) and they cannot join to defend because they are in the mamaluke war with you.
