Alright, I was playing as Byzantium, and before the current war I'm in had around 20 agressive expansion with genoa and savoy, and 15 with austria. Commonwealth called me into a war and I accepted, and genoa and savoy both joined. After I sieged them down, commonwealth gave me half of both of them and now everyone is joining a coaltion against me. It's not like I had the provinces set as vital interest either, the AI just decided to give me all this land and caused a coalation against me. This seems like a a big oversight, that an AI ally can just not understand AE and just cause a coaltion of everyone to form against you.

If they declare the coalition war and you think you will lose it, you can try giving them those provinces immediately.
or better yet, if commonwealth stays loyal, fight the war until some of their territory gets captured then give away just commonwealth land in the piece deal.

This isn't anything new. AI loves to return cores so sometimes it will give back a lot of cores or provinces which in turn gives them some AE. I guess that the AI don't care abou how much AE their target have and that's why players can go above 50AE from the AE giving them provinces after a war.

This. But sometimes your allies will just shaft you. Your AE is not their concern.

Yep, it's caused me grief on a number of occasions, and you can get it whether you cede occupation or not. But giving the occupation away does seem to reduce the chance you'll be granted these provinces. It just doesn't guarantee it.

We complain about the AI doing this, but I am pretty certain I gave seen doing this to the AI listed as a tactic to set up a coalition war against a chosen target.

But do you think the AI actually does it KNOWING that this will hurt you, or is it just trying to give you land to match your war contribution%?
I'm not sure it matters much why the AI does it. The complaint here is that the AI screwed the player in such a manner while players would consider it perfectly fair game to do the same to the AI.

There are also questions over how this happened: if the player transfers all his occupied provinces to the war leader this is much harder for the AI to do to a player.

I think it does matter. There is only a conflict between not liking getting screwed by the ai and doing it to the ai if both sides have the same reasons.

All nations, human and AI alike, should either have the ability to decline getting such territories, or not suffer the AE from them. I think the simplest way would be that whoever the war leader is suffers all AE related to their peace regardless of which ally gains it.
What’s the worst that could do, make me actually happy to join allies in war in the hopes of AE free land?
