I've just launched a massive Federation fleet off to the other side of the Galaxy, it takes 7 or 8 years to come back after having just concluded the war.

I was hoping to send the fleet to stop at one of the Federation members to get upgraded, this member also built a dozen cruisers to reinforce the grand fleet along the way.

When I click on the Upgrade button it sends it to my home territory instead.
However when I click the Repair button it does send the fleet to the allied starbases.

I tried to do a forum search on upgrading federation ships at allied bases but didn't find any existing discussion. For this 'Forever War' type scenario where ships become progressively obsolete the further from home, utilizing allied starbases for upgrades would be a big improvement (especially where allies built up the bulk of said fleet, it is illogical to send them back home to your own ports).

It's a bit janky, but you should be able to right-click on the star that an allied base is orbiting, and select "Upgrade Fleet to Latest Designs".
The 'upgrade' button often wants to take you somewhere distant.
Apologies if that doesn't work for federation fleets; I tend to avoid them and I might be mis-remembering what works.

The upgrade button sends my fleets to allied starbases all the time. Sometimes not the closest one, though.

Hmm, in the current version 2.2.3 right clicking gets me the enter orbit or set as homebase options.
Same on allies' bases and my own.

Not on the base, on the star the base is orbiting. It's pretty idiosyncratic.

That's funny. I reorganized a scattered fleet back into a united Federation one, with a foreign fleet banner, and this time the upgrade path is to an Allied starbase nearby.

I guess the original Federation fleet created by my own empire just wants to route itself back to home territory.

Since it's not your starbase, you can't see what it's queue is. The upgrade fleet button takes your fleet to the closest allied shipyard that can put your upgrade in the queue in less time than flying somewhere else will allow.

In short, you're skipping bases that are too busy for the closest base with the shortest upgrade time.

That's helpful to know. AI doesn't build many shipyard stations but that allied empire was churning out about a dozen cruisers one after the other, at a very, very slow rate (solo shipyard module). Still very odd to see a 2000+ day voyage home being the most expedient upgrade schedule.

I'm hoping this becomes better in 2.2.4 where they are addressing AI not building enough shipyards.

Sometimes it's as stupid as one shipyard only, and it's making a colony ship, so your fleet looks elsewhere.
