I request Paradox to keep the option of conscription in Victoria 2. One should be able to convert any population group to soldiers to any extent. Conscription is a fact of the Victorian era. Even Great Britain used to conscript soldiers from their favorite cultural groups from their so vast empire.

isn't this what building reserve pools basically did in V1. You set up how big a reserve pool you wanted, then at time of war called the citizenry to the colors, and voila, your conscripts were in uniform. As your POP grew and your standing army size grew (IIRC), you could increase the size of the reserve pool.

I think the reserve pool system worked very nicely in V1 in general idea (though not in how it drew specific POPs) and would really hope that it is kept for V2.

It's not exactly the same. Take for example ww1. Of course, the reserves were mobilised at the beginning of the war. But during the war a lot of people were conscripted. For example Germany managed to increase its number of divisions quite significantly during the war. This increase can not be modelled by the reserve pool, nor by "good salaries" for soldiers; the people were forcibly conscripted into the army.

I would like to see this expanded slightly in Victoria 2 if possible.

One of the key ways military planners controlled the strength of the army was through military service, and this was something that did not feature in the original Victoria.

It should not be operated in the way it was before, where you make a one off payment of resources (small arms and canned food IIRC) to increase you Mobilization pool. In reality, these levels were set through 1 year, 2 year or 3 year drafts (ala Hearts of Iron 3)

Perhaps it would be possible to simulate this, and link it to the political reforms? In this way you could model the traditional British reluctance to introduce conscription (the idea was frequently floated in the pre WW1 years but politics prevented it from becoming a reality)

The thing I hated tho was when it took middle class worker POPs into the army then when you demobilized you would be left with a bunch of farmer POPs.

Wait, the reserve system converted pops in the moment of mobilization?

I thought that the whole reserve system was outside the normal POP-conversion mechanism,it was just a temporary measure, you mobilize - get the units - demobilize - lose the units, and that was that?

I would like to see a set of reforms or a HOI style law system that changed the efficency of the military spending slider and also affects the quality of the players military units.

E.G Your military spending slider is at 50%

With conscription set to 'on' you get more solider pops but lower org units

With conscription 'off' you get fewer solider pops for the same money but the Org of your units is higher.

Except it they didn't, did they? I don't remember it ever being fixed, they always turned back into farmers/laborers.

Anyway, I'm hoping mobilising in V2 won't convert entire pops, just shave 3k segments off them to form into brigades. So if you have, say, a 30 brigade mobilisation pool it'll take 3000 men from 30 different large pops rather than converting one 90k pop.

That would make more sense. Vic1's mobilization always ended up giving me tons of soldiers from maybe 10 provinces (out of 100s) and always disproportionally from my minorities.

Needless to say once the war was over those provinces were depopulated. Two or three wars against Britain (playing as Russia) and there were hardly any Poles left :eek:o

i think it was deliberate for some reason:)wacko:). for one thing, it's written in the manual that this should happen.

it bad enough that your economy cirpples when you are conscripting. so i would want that changed too.

I think we should be able to select which cultural group we could conscript for the military.

Easy here, Vicky 2 is after all not a wargame. And if you look at the mess with HOI3 at the moment, I rather vote for less of these "features". The game is complex enough to balance and WWI and its military system is not what is vicky all about. We can not have everthing into this game. So I think, the military system should not be much changend from vicky1. The reserves have served me well enough.

Cheers, Phelan

+1

I think mobilization pool (something Vic1-like) should be included in the game, but also, I would strongly argue manual POP conversion to soldiers - at least in a wartime.

Also, as unit is now directly linked to the POP we should be able to "swap" to which POP it is linked to in a case of POP run out of people.

Easy here, Vicky 2 is after all not a wargame.

Yes, and we are not talking about thickness of tank armor here.

Exactly, I really wonder how Victoria2 will model that without manual conversion. We have to wait and see.
