I'm a new player to Europa Universalis and I started as Castille along with a few other saves I've made and it seems like Portugal and England(especially England) do not help me at all when I am allied to them.I start a war with Aragon and I pretty much fight myself with some Portuguese troops against Aragon,Naples(their vassal) and France.Would France be a better ally?Who would be the best allies to go with as Castille?I'm not asking for a strategy with Castille because I like thinking on my own.Just a few allies apart from the Papal State which I like being allied with. Finally, keep in mind I can't ally Portugal and France at the same time because France will call me to a war against Portugal soon enough.

It differs really, if you want to stomp France then you need to get a powerful bloc, like Burgundy AND Austria. France will not work as a long term ally because at some point they will inevitably rival you (neighbours). I personally prefer to start the game with all of Iberia in an alliance, although this may not always be possible with Aragon. The Iberian wedding will do the rest.

I go with France and help them with the 100 year war for the bonus like while putting a diplomat on them. You can counter some of the border friction by both having troop access to each other.

France will gladly help you eat both Aragon and Portugal in my experience.

I don't like sharing the Iberian peninsula and Portugal has some rich trade important provinces and gets in my way when I want to colonize. Letting them exist is a problem. Also france as an ally is a good land defense.

They won't always rival you if you stay out of italy.

It's really hard to see the situation, you can influence the diplomacy to a certain extent and it's hard to do so without a view of the whole situation. A lot of it depends on rivals of rivals etc indeed.

It depends on your goals. If you intend to take all of Iberia for yourself, then France is a perfectly suitable ally...for the short term. By the time France is ready to turn her attention to you, you will have all or most of the peninsula under your control.

Then it's time to pick up the phone and call Austria!

I actually just started a game as Castille -> Spain
the best ally IS France
if you never go under +100 relation, it will never rival you and you gain a very nice ally (and you don't really care about the pyrennee border anymore)
France may bring you in the hundred year war, just go, I managed to gain portuguese provinces like that.

Improve relations with Austria and Burgundy. Fabricate a claim on Poitou. Ally with Austria and Burgundy at the same time to avoid penalty because they are rivals. Crush france. France in the HYW can't afford fighting 4 major powers. I think is the best way because Portugal is no threat and France will be sooner or later, and you don't want France taking provinces from Aragon because in the long run, he will fall under a personal union with Castille.

First of all, based on that you're a new player you might not know it but as Castille you never need to fight Aragon. Because there is an event that almost always fires(if it doesn't fire then you're VERY unlucky) that basically puts Aragon in a PU under you. So just ally them if they accept or improve relations so you have good relations so that you never fight untill you get the PU because conquering them would be pointless and would make you waste resources.

As for France, if you want to play a colonise oriented game, just ally them and have fun winning all land wars with no effort in Europe unless they start unliking you for some reason. If they decided to rival you(which isn't very likely unless you expand a lot in Europe) you might just ally Austria unless they rivalled you too... If you want to conquer France though, you should be quick about it. You should have Burgundy(if still alive) and Austria as allies and beat them before they get their 3rd idea. Just release everything you can out of them then conquer the little pieces one by one, or diplo vassalise some of them then diplo annex as you choose.

As for Portugal, it's probably the most profitable way to just conquer them before colonisation starts since they will be a competer for colonising... Possibly after you've established your PU with Aragon so that they both don't attack you on two fronts. But I actually prefer letting them live since I like having them around and having to compete them while having great relations. Also if you want to conquer North Africa, they usually join those wars.
Though you'll probably conquer Portugal too if you had already dealt with France.

So I started a save with Castile after reading through the tips and knowing a big war wouldn't be good as I am a newbie,I decided to vassalize Navarra and annex Granada. Both done pretty easily. My situation is ok except that France and England now consider me as a rival...I am allied to Portugal and the Papal State and I might try to ally Austria.I now got my first colonist and I don't even know how to use him. Some help would be nice. Thanks to all of you!
