Just getting into HOI3 - TFH.

Playing Germany in the 1939 scenario. Italy is a part of the Axis. Poland is Conquered and the battle for France has begun.

The Italian forces facing French forces in the sout of France outnumber the French forces. But I cannot get the Italians to attack them. Went to diplomacy, selected France and set a wargoal for western France. Those darned Italians just sit there on their behinds doing NADA!

Maybe its the game and the Italians are ignoring the Germans for good reason or maybe I am not using the correct mechanics necessary to set a war goal for the Italians correctly.

So how does one set a wargoal for an ally and get them to honor it if it is within the ally's capability?

You set wargoals for yourself not your allies. For example Japan has a "seize the coast" wargoal. They have to make Nat China surrender first, so they often occupy most of China, but then the wargoal fires and they give some of it back. Imagine if you had a wargoal of Florida with the USA, and you conquered everything but Texas, and finally the USA surrendered. You would only end up getting Florida, your wargoal, the rest would revert back to the USA.

You have to use allied objectives. Click on a province, for example Marseille. Click on the arrow at the province overview to expand it.
Your ally will commit troops to conquering that province within his capabilities. Note that breaking through level 5 forts in alpine terrain is far from easy.

Have you called the Italians to arms? Check the diplomacy screen, pull up Italy and make sure they are actually at war. If not, call them to arms.

But gunstick is also right that they will likely do nothing unless and until they see a weakening of that fortified front. He is also right that the mechanism you are looking for to make an ally target a specific location for attack or reinforcement is the AI objectives function. But be warned, your allies will see that as a request, not an order. They will fit it into their list of priorities somewhere, but not necessarily high up on it if they have pressing matters happening elsewhere or they calculate that the objective is unachievable.

This is not an area i have delved into so its all pleasant news to me. How about a situation whereby you arent at war yet with a nation but want your allies to target them. Is DOWing or Tag switching the only way? For example if im Germany, and i want my allies to attack Yugoslavia. While at Peace most of their troops are on opposite borders, rather then Yugoslavia, so if i simple DOW and call to arms, at least in the beginning Yugoslavia will spread all over. Anyway of targeting them prior? or would i have to run their threat through the roof to do so?

I guess all you can do is indeed raise threat or set allied objectives. Can't see any other ways of achieveing what you're asking for.
