Russia in the 1620s; my vassal Crimea is in trouble again, this time with the Siebenburgen who also own Moldova. We ride to the Khan's rescue, smashing the Transylvanians' army and besieging Jedisan which they took from the Crimeans. Since they won't listen to my peace offer, I decide the next move will be to go on the offensive, capture both their provinces and then create a new vassal state, Moldavia, and that will be the last we'll be hearing from the Siebenburgen for a while, heh heh heh. The siege bar is red; in another month Jedisan will be back in Crimean hands, and the counter attack will begin!
The Crimeans then snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by signing a peace which hands over the province to the Siebenburgen before we can recapture it! ARGH!

Muahahahahha, :D
Perhaps that's a possible explanation why i am seldom in an alliance... It's good to be neutral coz you can always create an alliance with a country to diploannex them. One disadvantage is prolly that you get dragged in less wars. This on the other hand, is also an advantage, coz you can join someone else's alliance when he is at war with the desired country. This of course is if you still have any friends among the living :D

I'm usually undesirable scum hated by everyone. Suits me... It's their problem, not mine

Damn AI! Sometimes it makes the dumbest decisions. Whenever this happens to me I have to remind myself of the times when the AI gives me a COT in a peace deal that, if he had fought for a few more months, he would be demanding all my money. :p

It depends what size you are. If you are small you must have strong allies. As Georgia, I allied with the Ottomans, and went along with the ride and ended up with a 16 prov nation before I discontinued. As a minor, it is hard enough to fight wars with the AI cheating on support limit, so having allies saves your bacon. After a couple of games of Brandenburg, and getting slapped everywhere, I allied with Poland which made things heaps easier.
Make sure you are alliance leader, so you will get the say on the peace deal.
My favourite tactic is when attacking a 2 prov nation, let your ally take the capital, and you take the other. You will get the prov, even if the AI makes the deal. I do this with Catille-Granada as Portugal. Let Castille take out Granada, and I sit on Gibraltar, and I get the province plus half the tribute:D

Yep, that's a good way to go. The only exception I make is for a vassal I plan to diplo-annex. I want to be able to save their arse if they wind up in a war. But, I guess that doesn't always work.

The Knights are just plain disgusting as allies, far easier to handle as enemies. They purposely siege the exact same provinces as you. Once I noticed, wherever I moved the army I had they would FOLLOW. Their size 8 army could outsiege an army considerably in excesse of size 20. They only had one higher land tech and no important bonuses from the tech level. I was playing as Italy (Tuscany turned into Italy in 1492.)

Eventually I tricked them by dividing my forces into a small cavalry unit and a large infantry unit (which moved away to a new province). Then they final starting moving after the panel with the infantry however it was too late. In addition to that they kept moving on the province then retreating with a white flag (what the?) they kept doing that over and over again until I sieged the province then the final caught on and sieged the one they originally were after. After the war I expelled them from the alliance because they had a core province I needed.

Rather difficult when playing against the AI, since the player nation almost invariably ends up being the most powerful after a short time. Frankly, I usually limit my alliances to my coreligionist vassals, and only invite them into a war when I think they can hack it. (Or when I'm fighting France. You can never have enough allies against France.)

I sympathize with those who have written of problems with allies. That's all part of the game, and we've all seen that kind of thing from time to time.

On the other hand, sometimes you can get a really good alliance. I achieved just that in my current GC as Siena. Holding most of Italy and North Africa from Tunis to Alexandria, I was allied to both Austria and Spain, Siena as alliance leader. Needless to say, these three countries made a formidable alliance. I had a very satisfying war of dismemberment against the Turks after they annexed my Greek vassals. Military cooperation among the three allies was obviously not perfect, but really it went rather well. Spain and Siena teamed up to crush Algeria (the Turks' only ally) with Spain taking the Western half and Siena the Eastern. Against the Turks, Austria defeated them in the Northern half of the Balkans, with Siena moving up through Greece to Thrace. Spain, from their base in Sochi, attacked the Eastern half of modern day Turkey. It took a LOT of persuasion to get the Turks to concede defeat, but eventually, with 12 provinces conquered and 4 others under siege and a 96% war score, they folded. I had a lot of fun rewarding my allies with selected provinces. Everybody was happy (well, except for the Turks).

So even AI allies can be good sometimes.:)

The bad news is that this great war took place in 1696. Then in 1700, the events of the Spanish Succession took place, and that was pretty much the end of the alliance. But I held it together for more than 100 years, and it was a lot of fun while it lasted.

Depends on who you're playing. In Europe - yes, you'll end up on top invariably, even playing as Munster, Saxony or somesuch. If you're Assam, on the other hand...

But who's more powerful than Russia? I need to bail out vassals, because don't they contribute VPs to me? I recently had to fight for both the Ukrainians and the Crimeans against Poland, who thought that now they were allied to Austria they could start grabbing back land...
