I'll run through my scenario...

- I'm the King of Burgundy.
- Savoy is De Jure part of Burgundy.
- Savoy belongs to the HRE, thus I have a CB on Savoy.
- My allies include the Byzantine Empire
- HRE allies include the Byzantine Empire

I would have thought due to these alliances that the Byzantine Empire would be neutral in any conflict between me and the HRE... Yet when I try to declare war on the HRE, I can see that the Byzantine Empire will become his ally during the conflict. Opinion wise the Byzantine emperor favours me more.

What gives?

Ah, OK.. Makes sense. Would a non-aggression pact with Byzantine have served me better in this case?

Thanks for the info. :)
I would say yes. In fact, if I were in your place, I would a) check what holds together the alliance between ERE and HRE and if it can be easily broken, or b) dissolve alliance with Byzantines and form NAP instead.

Thanks again for the tips. I'm playing the game with my daughter and she hates it when I try to bump people off. So we play a strictly murder-free game.

Looks like option b for me! :)

If it's a single marriage and you have free investiture, you could just invite happy couple and nominate guy as heir for the oldest bishop you have. :p

Though I guess that wouldn't work if he's heir to something else.
