I'm not exactly sure what's happening here but I can say that RM's don't make it so you can't ally with them. If they are a vassal of a nation, then you can't invite them to your alliance...

Other than that, I can't think of any other reason atm.

I think I know what's wrong, but have a couple questions:

1. What country are you?
2. What year is it?

Dang, I missed that point! I see where you're going with this, though.

Only the alliance leader is allowed to invite other nations to join the alliance. For example, at the start of the Grand Campaign England and Spain are allies, but it is Spain which is the leader. England has no control over who its allies are, except by quitting the alliance (and taking a Stability hit for doing so).

Yeah, that's what I'm trying to find out. Even if he's not England at the start of the (I)GC, at any point if Spain is leader my point would apply.

With these guys around, you don't really need a manual. In fact, they'll simply tell you that the manual is pretty much useless and a waste of paper & ink.

Plus, they'll help you even if you're not a likable person. Oh, I'm not saying that you are not likable. You probably are very tolerable. :p It's me that raises the hackles on a few, select folks around here.

But they still respond when I have questions.

Oh, definitely true. Especially with the newer versions, because I don't think they edited the manual to reflect the changes that the patches entailed.

Good thing the game isn't exactly really hard to figure out the basics most of the time. Well at lest it does, but it's so fun that you don't even notice. Lol I remember my first game as England. I DoWed Scotland and took over them and then peaced them for 3 provinces + money. The only thing was that it seemed that I hadn't clicked the province thing hard enoguh or something and only got the money. :p

Anyway the good thing is that you are always finding new strategies, no one strategy is best. That's the best part and the most challenging. :D

You are not kidding. I feel like I am getting a big 56k hug from everyone. The problem is I do not like human contact of any kind, so I will be leaving now.

AH-HA! A fellow Republican ...

But seriously, as a fellow newbie (of the worst kind), I have found that simply playing the tutorial one evening, plus reading the FAQs here on the forum, and talking to some of these very helpful gents will get you in the driver's seat quicker'n you kin spit of'n a bridge. :D

Congratulate me CR! I'm staying on-topic. :p
