I know this is a WAD issue. Probably not so much WAD, as more of a situation that you can't really test for or think up. I'm not quite sure what to do about it if anything.

Anyways, I'm Germany playing the '36 scenario. I spend three years building up a terrifying armed force. While I do this, Franco manages to win his civil war. Probably furious over Soviet intervention, he decides to unilaterally invade Russia! OK, while not terribly likely in the real world, I've give the AI credit for it's boldness. Mussolini, not wanting to feel left out, declares war as well. Once again, not the most realistic scenario, but it's kind of funny to watch the Italians occasionally take Sevastopol before being utterly destroyed by the inevitable Soviet counterattack.

I finally invade Poland and the Allies declare war against me. Cool. I finish off Poland and consume most of France (except of course for a huge garrison living the easy life in the Maginot Line, fully supplied by the new French capitol in Colmar. Is this a bug or just an annoying way to force you to except Vichy instead of conquering all of Metro France?)

Now that I have French ports, I decide I want to move my German fleet south into the Med so I can cause some trouble. Of course, I can't get by Gibraltar. (The choke point this is new in 1.04? Yes? Nice feature if so.) I could try to influence Nat. Spain for military access so I can pummel Gibraltar, but it's going to take a while and use up a lot of DI. I then finally realize I can make my life a lot easier by one simple move . . .

I declare war on Nationalist Spain.

Nationalist Spain is, of course, welcomed into the open arms of the Western Allies, who are now, without clearly understanding how they arrived in this situation, at war with the Comintern. Germany laughs at this situation, then invades Spain to get a nice route to Gibraltar. While I stopped playing the game at this point because it just didn't seem fun anymore, I can only assume that having the Allies and Comintern at each other's throats would have made the game a lot easier for the Axis.

Obviously, not everything can be forseen in a game this complicated, but I do have some questions . . .

1. Why are Spain and Italy being so aggressive? They can't hope to win a war against the SU. Seems a little foolhardy on the part of the AI.

2. This is more of a "what if" question. Would the Allies automatically assist Nat. Spain if attacked by Germany? Franco is a Fascist. Then again, the Allies had no problem embracing Stalin when he was needed, and he was just a Fascist in a red coat. If the Allies did come to Spain's rescue, would they automatically declare war on the Soviet Union?

This situation is just too screwy. Basically, every country in the game I just played decided to go to war completely against it's own interest. I only enjoy a game like this if it seems like a situation that might possibly occur in the real world happens in the game. I just don't see this happening in the real world (esp. Spain declaring war on the SU.)

Of course, I have no suggestions on how to "fix" the problem. Is it even a problem or do some games just get too crazy? Should alliances be more complicated to allow for a situation where the Allies wouldn't automatically help Spain? Or if they did, that they Allies didn't automatically go to war with the SU? Any thoughts? By the way, I'm playing 1.04. Is the new "angry" Spain and new "angry" Italy part of an AI tweak?
