What do you all end up doing with all your diplomats?

I mean you could work on relations but that costs money and I tend to like to save money.

What are the best ways to spend your diplomats? Claiming thrones? strengthening alliances? aiming for long term diplo-annexing?

Showering the electors with gifts until they appoint you Emperor, of course. Anything else is just the regular declare war / offer alliance stuff.

yep, there's usually gonna be an excess of diplomats in catholic courts. The exceptions in my experience are wartime and the very beginning- wartime, you have lots of peace deals, embargoes, access treaties, etc to propose, plus generals to promote, all of which consumes diplomats quickly; in the beginning, you need as many as you can to tweak your positions to your liking, ie get what nations you want as allies to be allies, what nations you want to be friends with into RMs, etc. Any other time, I basically just spread a few agreements around for hypothetical, long-term stuff (ie access through nations to get at other nations that you *may* want to attack later, etc) and let the counter build up to 5.

If I'm playing as a 1 province minor, I at least give military access to the scary factions that I share a border with. It won't necessarily keep them from attacking, but I think it helps. Getting lots of diplomats sometimes doesn't help at all, but if your trying to quickly diplo vassal, improve relations, if your king dies, to redo royal marriages with all your allies (if you want to) or make peace deals, the more the merrier.

If I have abhorous relations with nations ... the only way I can think of to increase relationships is to give military access and ask them for access.
Then I wait... wait... wait... and see if they get better.
