The democratic peace theory does not require them to be "real" democracies. It refers to any non-autocratic rule.Merchant republic should certainly not since they are kinda rivals to each other, and in 1444 there was not many real democracys, but maybe the later government types as the constitutional republic should have the bonus.
See above, and do merchant republics OTHER than Venice and Genoa have a history of de facto rivalry? If anything things like the Hanseatic League make it seem like they were more likely to join together to force their way into non-republican lands.I almost laughed when you called republics democracies. They were most definitly not democratic. If anything merchant republics should consider each other rivals (and iirc they always have a trade dispute cb against each other, also).
