In my game as Norway -> Iceland, I rushed ASAP to the new world. I started my first colony in Newfoundland around 1483. By then the southern tribes in NA were already duchies without any European in sight (only the Portuguese were on 2 islands in the Caribbean). By the time my second colony was finished (1491), literally all tribes were duchies, no federations were left and the complete eastern coastline was occupied by cities. Still no other Europeans in sight. I assume the southern natives took their 4th government reform (Trading with foreigners) while bordering the Aztec/Maya nations, which then spread in a decade across NA.

I assume this is working as designed, but this takes away a lot of fun in that region. Instead of colonizing, it now comes down to waging war, dealing with separatism, religion conversion, ... just like anywhere else in the world.

It's been a while since I've played in this region. Is this normal or am I just very unlucky it spread this fast?

Did you play without the El Dorado DLC? With that DLC, the Aztec/Maya countries are also primitive and it is not possible to use the tier 4 reform with them(and even without that DLC, they must have gotten Feudalism somehow).
But the natives can also reform with their fifth reform. It might be possible to reach that early in some cases. Do you maybe play the 1.31.5 beta? I think in that version the natives get too much reform progress(0.5 per month from their first government reform and 10/year for 0 autonomy which they didn't get in previous patches).

I'm playing with all dlc's and with 1.31.5 beta. That last bit might explain it. Hope it does not stay this way, since it's a bit too much now...

Just checked: In 1.31.5, nations with 3 reforms (including Oral Tradition reform) at game start get 1.67 per month (1.25 * (0.5 + 10/12)). It takes them 22-23 years to get to the last tier to reform into a duchy, faster if they build specific buildings. This is waaaay too fast, must be a bug. In 1.31.4, the same nation only gets 0.62 per month, so it takes them around 60 years. Still too fast if you ask me.

Yeah, I recently had a game with the 1.31.5 beta branch where I discovered the same thing. All of North America consisted of monarchies and steppe hordes... I really wish they'd stay natives for some centuries more, as like what you say, there's practically zero interaction between natives and europeans as it is right now.

I would like to make a small mod, like an event giving these tags a huge nerf in govt reform points generation to try to slow things down and at least get a few AI Colonial nations...

But I can't script for EUIV, my modding days were in EU4/HoI2/ViC2 days.

In Europa Universalis/Common/government_reforms/05_government_reforms_natives.txt , after the "modifiers = {" at the very top, change "reform_progress_growth = -1.0" to "reform_progress_growth = -1.15".

You might have to tweak that number a bit, as I can't remember at which value it passes over to removing government progress all together. It's somewhere a bit over 1.

Having the natives settle 100/150 years later would be a step in the good direction.
Personally I'm dealing with it by having added triggers to the "settle down" reforms (the "trade with" one i moved to the last tier and require "global trade") which require them to adopt enlightenment, i.e. not being able to until quite late game. It's not an ideal fix, but at least it guarantees the natives to stick around!

Good lord. Give us 1.30.6 with achievements on!
You can revert back to 1.30.6 and still get achievements. If you can't get achievements in a new game on 1.30.6, you either have mods enabled or your installation is corrupted/modified.

Sure! Just extract this in your My Documents/Paradox/Europa Universalis/Mod folder :)


It's a bunch of small tweaks which I enjoy, but if you only want the change to government reforms, extract the folder and delete every folder except for common/government_reforms and common/governments !
