Aliens, or not aliens on Sol III?

Just playing a round of Stellaris and find Sol III, humans are in the medieval era. (Never seen them in that era before in any other games I played so far) But, there be some pre-sentient aliens on it as well. Called the Qwe'Pulci which is the name of the the fluffy looking bear/bird things?

Pretty sure I have no mods that affect the pre-sentient spawns. But I can't tell if it's a bug on the base game itself also. Or just a very very rare chance of it happening, which would be cool in truth. Having two races on the same planet, makes you wonder how much different our history would be if such a thing happened in our universe. Most likely chaos and one of the two races being wipe out, but oh well.

It did happen in our (pre-)history. During the last Ice Age there were a range of species in the genus Homo, it's just that they were all driven to extinction by Homo sapiens sapiens, which went onto colonise the whole planet's land area (aside from Antarctica and remote islands).

You can imagine a more interesting outcome though, where different intelligent species are adapted to different biomes, and so end up coexisting without one having a competitive advantage over the others. The most likely one I can think of is a marine species coexisting with a terrestrial one. Maybe if some species of whales/dolphins were just a bit smarter than they already are...

There is a rare chance that this happens, and as the developers didn't ever "fix" that and it occurs since the release, I'm guessing that this is intended to happen (but very rarely).
