Well, what benefits does it give ?

It's pretty badass to be the center of Dwarven civilization.... but on the other hand, this will attract attention

Hm... Well, attracting attention should be fun, right ?
Do it. We deserve it.

Of course we accept it, a massive reward for your excellent leadership skills.

The benefits are mostly that the King and/or Queen moves here (and starts issuing mandates, such as "Make a platinum toilet for me!").

Other than that. it's largely just prestige.

Can we build a guillotine to get rid of the king or queen, asking for our French dwarves.
A Magma-guillotine sounds more Dwarfy. Take head off by sudden drop of magma. For specialness, make it on a wood floor over a large drop.

We can do better than that... we can "accidentally" hook up their shower to the Magmaduct!

I went into the Justice screen and ordered our Captain of the Fortress Guard to arrest and interrogate the accused dwarf, but before he arrived on the scene I got this message:

It's a conspiracy!

OK... to start with, I'm adding a middle drawbridge to the trade depot, so the next time the Hippies come, I can give them a nice Magma bath.

... once our pump stack and Magmaduct are finished, of course.

I will also tear down our Cobaltite Trade Depot and rebuild it out of some Magma-resistant material.

How did the hippy manage to escape the lockdown? More worryingly one of our dwarves was willing to conspire with dirty hippies.

Wait a minute wasn't Aye Denamused behind the last attempt of someone trying to steal an artifact?

There was some Denamused indeed. Sloppy gatekeeping! :p

I suppose Magma will keep the hipsters out.

There's always a delay between giving a lever-pulling task and some lazy dwarf deciding to carry it out. In this case, four levers had to be pulled, one for each gate.

I locate my control room right off the meeting hall / cafeteria in the hopes that an unoccupied dwarf will be nearby, but in this release version (v47.05) most of them seem to be downstairs praying in the temple instead.

One could argue that I should set up a special Lockdown lever, that closes ALL the exits with one pull.

I think that before declaring war, I'll first DEMAND that they return the stolen Artifact. That should satisfy the proprieties.

I think I'll prepare some Royal Apartments for them first... because they are sure to demand that as soon as they arrive.

Interlude: a few engravings.

When Dwarves decorate a room, they engrave the walls and floor with various images. Often these images are innocuous. Sometimes not. We'll start with some images that were engraved early in the Fort's history, before the sieges and thefts started.

His octehedra are very octehedral. Well done.

AD_282.jpg

LOL, offended. Sculptedhoods was one of the gods who didn't get a temple of their own. He's worshipped in Small Gods, along with several other minor dieties.

AD_283.jpg

Charcoalcrests thinks that's pretty funny. He DID get a temple of his own.

One of our former Mayors, Meng Helmcastles, has a phobia about Cave Spiders. They freak him right out.

AD_284.jpg

Our engraver taunts him about it:

More later.

Once a fort starts its descent into madness and tantrum spirals, the engravings tend to get a bit macabre. Pictures of a flaming magma-covered dwarf beating another dwarf to death with a burning sock, for example.

The Magma-Drop Pan suspended ten levels above our southern gate is nearly complete.

Damn it! A construction accident...

AD_287.jpg

I stupidly forgot that drawbridges do NOT support adjacent constructions, and my dwarves tried to build a floor section on a tile that they could reach only by standing on a drawbridge... so the new floor section was built unsupported, and immediately collapsed ten levels down onto the ground, generating a cloud of cave-in dust that knocked the worker unconscious (not a good state to be in, ten levels up on an incomplete construction), threw him five tiles and slammed him into a wall.

AD_289.jpg

Miraculously, except for being knocked out, he seems to be completely uninjured. If he had been thrown in a slightly different direction, he would have gone right over the edge.

AD_290.jpg

My mistake.

Meanwhile, I've just realized that there's a Ghost on the northern part of the Magmaduct. I'd better take care of that before he pushes one of the workers off.
