Hmmm... suddenly our frame rate drops to 17 FPS.

Action immanent?

EDIT: Huh... apparently not. We're back up to 32 FPS, and no attack yet. When our frame-rate tanked like that, I assumed that it was invaders entering the map.

Construction has begun on our Water-Wheel farm.

Eight Wheels are in place so far. All together, this assembly generates 800 power but consumes 97 in friction. Net gain: about 700 power. We'll need about five times that just to power all those pumps, and some extra to cover transmission losses (ie: getting the power from here to the Pump Stack).

One idea what to do with the magma:

We completely replace the fortress with smoothed (and engraved - to scare of attackers) obsidian walls.
Alternatively we build a three stories high throne room mahe completely out of obsidian and gold. Not obsidian block mind you, but dug out of obsidian.

Now up to 1700 power generated and 201 consumed in frictional distribution losses. That's over a third of what we'll need for the Pump Stack.

EDIT: Now up to 2600 power generated and 324 consumed in frictional losses. That's about 2/3rds of what we'll need.

So we are now in year 4, and still no invaders. I checked, and yes they ARE turned on in the Init file.

I wonder if some sort of terrain thing is keeping them back? Or maybe they are busy raiding the other nearby Dwarven settlement instead of us?

I expect some invaders are coming. They are just mysteriously delayed.

It gives us time to get a good start on our Pump Stack.

Would it be an idea to build a double wall, with the outer being simply a magma retainer for when we have to flood everything?

Keep some trees alive outside it.

I think I've figured out how to transfer power from our Water-Wheel farm to our Pump-Stack (which is about 25 tiles away) without allowing animals, children or invaders to get into the works.

I'll test it.

I've come up with a use for those useless Fishermen!

I'll just let them go outside to fish, and they'll act as an Early Warning System. Any Goblin ambush will probably hit them instead of a more useful Dwarf.
Why don't they fish inside you fort?

It can be done... although there are some pretty nasty creatures that LIVE in lava. And, of course, fliers would ignore it completely.

Also... that would completely cut us off from supplies of wood. Steel-making requires charcoal or coke, even at a Magma Forge.

EDIT: And we will need HUGE quantities of Wood for our Waterwheels. That pump-stack will need LOTS of power. 3000 power just for the pumps alone.
Can't you get wood from indoor mushrooms?

Can't you get wood from indoor mushrooms?
Yes, but it will require transporting water to the site we intend to use. I'll work on it later.

Our Power Plant is finished! It generates 4100 Kittenpower, and loses 530 to friction... so that's 3570 Kittenpower available.

Pumps need 10 power each, and I'll need at least 270 of them. That's 2700 power required for the pump stack.

That leaves 800+ power in reserve.

Notice those two green things in the power train, one just south of the Water Wheels, and the other adjacent to the (yellow) Pump Stack.

Those are "dry" pumps... pumps placed on land, where they can't pump anything. What is their purpose? The output end of a pump is treated as a solid wall. So I've placed and oriented those two "dry" pumps so that they can transfer power THROUGH the wall, without leaving a hole that someone could use to enter the Power Plant or the Pump Stack.

Naturally, this whole assembly is roofed in, so it is effectively a sealed unit. If for some reason it required servicing, I would have to deconstruct a wall to get in.

Why don't they fish inside you fort?
I already HAVE set up a couple of safe spots for them to fish... one indoors, and two in the outdoors compound. They seem to prefer living dangerously.
