It was a sunny afternoon in the ancient city of Rome. Nicholas V, the Pope and head of the Catholic Church was enjoying the papal gardens and the coming of spring, it always made him happy. But this year he had serious problem to be dealt with. A man named Gaius Iulius Secundus, formerly called as Lorenzo Abaco, and his silly followers were gaining more and more power in not only in Rome but throughout the Apennine Peninsula. Some say he’s a madman while others, most commonly his followers, say that he’s a pure genius, a masterpiece of God. If only he was just an ordinary trifling agitator but no, this man was more. First of all he was rich, one of the richest men in the city of Rome and perhaps in all of Italy, and thus he also had a relatively large private army. Of course, it wasn’t as organized and well trained as the Swiss Guard but none should underestimate the power you can get with wealth. Secondly he was excellent speaker and knew of ancient history, the times of Ancient Rome and their conquest of Mediterranean, even less would incite the ignorant peasantry. But there was no chance even he could recreate the Roman Empire from nothing. Nicholas pondered the situation. According to the intelligence reports the man had majority of Rome behind his thoughts. It was time to leave Rome, for now, and get help from aboard, perhaps France or Castille. The Pope sighed and walked back inside, a convoy would leave immediately to Avignon. Rome was not safe anymore.

* * *

Gaius Iulius Secundus: “People of Rome! Hear me talking to you. A time has come for us to show the world power of the Romans once again!”
The large crowd cheered.
Gaius Iulius Secundus: “Today is the beginning, a new era of dynasty! Today Rome, tomorrow the world! This day we’ll…”
Brutus Mussus: “Lorenzo! I mean Gaius! He has left it, it is time!”
Gaius Iulius Secundus: “Don’t you see I am busy now, who are you talking of anyways?”
Brutus Mussus: “Him, the one-who-should-not-be-mentioned-in-front-of-a-thousand-Catholics-in-a-manner-like-this.”
Gaius Iulius Secundus: “I don’t understand what you are talking about but shush now or I will have to reconsider your place as the commander of my loyal armies my dear friend.”
Brutus dragged Gaius from the stage, leaving behind a crowd of confused peasants.

Benitus “Brutus” Mussus, the loyal friend and right hand of Gaius had always been fascinated of the ancient buildings of Rome and after hearing of the Romans from Gaius he immediately joined the Novo Roma, an organisation set up by Lorenzo, having the goal of taking over Rome. It was just a small band of brothers at first, but it all changed after Gaius managed to cheat a Berber merchant in Barcelona and took over his assets and the position as most influential of Ivory traders in the Mediterranean.
Gaius Iulius Secundus, originally called as Lorenzo Abaco, was an Italian merchant who was born in Venice to a lower-class merchant family 1st of January 1400. His parents always told him it was a sign and he would become something great in the future. He was sent to a school in Bologna where he learned of the ancient Rome. Fascinated by their ways of living and the mighty Empire, he decided to leave for Rome to learn more of these people. In Rome he started earning his living by trading with the North Africans. He was always unlucky and he barely managed to feed himself from time to time. At those times he was unsure whether the plans to take over Rome would work. Most thought of him as a madman. But then he had a true stroke of luck. He was visiting in Barcelona to buy a new cargo vessel for transporting sugar from Crete when he heard of this man named Thafath Tara who was selling the prosperous Ivory for ridiculous prices at the docks. It was this man whose possessions Lorenzo managed to take over after gambling whether he could earn money than the Berber from nothing within one day. He didn’t only get his hands on the most prosperous stockpiles of Ivory, but the poor Berber also owned three gold mines, a small town of his own on the island of Malta and spices from the furthest corners of Arabia. That day was the finest of all for Novo Roma.

Brutus Mussus: “The Pope has left the city, he is on his way to Avignon, the last stronghold they possess.”
Gaius Iulius Secundus: “It is time. Rally the men, this’ll be our finest hour.”

Gaius left in haste, he had an Empire to be built.

The armies of Gaius took over every single building that had some importance in Rome, while his Arab men stormed Romagna, they soon proceeded to siege the small state of Siena. Everything went fine and well until another minor state, Urbino, joined the fun. Alone they wouldn’t have had any chance to stop Gaius but they had somehow managed to persuade the Hungarians to join in. Smart man as he was, Gaius quickly hired the first mercenaries he could find.

Gaius: “Good day sir, I take it you are here to be hired.”
The Commander: “Ya sure I am, with me 999 Greek mercenaries!”
Gaius: “Sounds good, I heard the Greeks are excellent fighters, serving in his Sultan's armies on the other side of this pond. What’s your name and past experience?”
The Commander: “Am just Tom. We’re sugar farmers.”
Gaius: “Sugar farmers… are you sure you know how to fight?”
Tom: “Yeh we’ll I’d guess so mister. Have you ever tried to grow sugar in Crete? With all those bloody goats it’s damned hard. Ya need to know how to battle those things and their pesky owners. It’s no good livin’ on a such small island with all those damned Cretans you know.”
Gaius: “Right… Well you’re hired because you’re the only ones here. You’re job is to siege the city of Urbino while I march my men to Hungary, understood?”
Tom: “I think so yeah, now ya just need to tell me where this damned village is and we’ll PILLAGE it. And RAID it, and BURN it and...”
Gaius: “No don’t do that, just… siege it alright? Good. Come my men! Hungary awaits!”

Gaius marched away with 4000 Romans. Everything went fine and foreign lords granted them access across the lands until they arrived to the border of Milan, where they faced 6000 Milanese blocking the road.

Gaius: “Good day son. Would you be so kind and move so we can continue our quest to enslave the Hungarians?”
Milanese Commander: “No I don’t think we should.”
Gaius: “Why not? What stops you from granting us a single access through your country? We wouldn’t stay for more than few days anyways.”
Milanese Commander: “Sir our allies, the Tuscans, declared a war against you. I think that makes us enemies.”
Gaius: “Oh, well that explains it. How about we make a white peace on this second?”
Milanese Commander: “How about no? We have almost double the men you have. We could just crush you and take over Rome.”
Gaius: “Right well that’s true I suppose. How about you become our vassal then? I mean, we have over half of the men you have it would be a bloody struggle and could go on for days.”
Milanese Commander: “Hmm you have a point there.”
Gaius: “No one wants to fight and die anyways, right?”
Milanese Commander: “Correct. I think we have to accept your offer… liege. Go on and crush the Hungarians. Oh and while you’re here, you should do something about the Tuscans. They’re behind those hills over there.”
Gaius: “I suppose we might as well do something about them.”

Gaius sent his Arab men siege cities of Firenze and Pisa while continuing his quest to defeat the Hungarians. Tom and his 999 sugar farmers were still siegeing the city of Urbino. The 30 000 inhabitants of it were scared for their lives with the angry Greeks outside the city.

The Consul arrived to Budapest in the morning, with his 4000 Romans. 18 000 other raiders greeted them warmly.

Ottoman Commander: “Greetings Italians. You are here too to siege the city of Budapest?”
Gaius: “Yes, yes we are. Who are all these people?”
Ottoman Commander: “These are the people who for some reason have something against the poor Hungarians. There’s the Austrians, that group over there is made of Romanians. Oh and those are Polish over there! Come join us! Everyone is welcome!”
Gaius: “… We, we didn’t quite except it to be like this… We were waiting for bloody battles and though situation where we are outnumbered by the Hungarians. Heroic victories, heroes never seen before and spoils of war to bring home!”
Ottoman Commander: “He he, well their treasures are sort of taken already. Not that they had much anyways. And don’t except any heroic victories either their armies were already slaughtered you see. Well apart from the men hiding inside Budapest of course.”
A Hungarian diplomat rides to the Romans on his horse.
The Diplomat: “Our mighty king wants to see you Romans. This way my Roman friends. The king awaits.”

Gaius and his men were led inside the city walls. It was relatively empty as all the Hungarians were already slaughtered in battles. The king’s palace was also empty apart from couple of guards and diplomats. Everything worthy of something had already been distributed in numerous peaces.

Hungarian King: “Welcome! Take a seat.”
Gaius: “Thank you… you joined the state of Urbino in a war against us while you are in a war with half of the world. Why?”
Hungarian King: “Well, we thought that couple of more rivals wouldn’t hurt. I am sorry but we don’t have anything to offer anymore so what do you think of white peace?”
Gaius: “No! We travelled all the way here from Rome! We want something or else we’ll pillage this city.”
Hungarian King: “Get in line, there’s 18 000 angry invaders before you. Meanwhile would you like some tea?”
Gaius: “There must be something you can offer us. Land, money or even fame.”
Hungarian King: “Well… we could release Croatia as a sovereign state. How would that sound?”
Gaius: “Err uh.. Croatia? What on earth will we do with Croatia?”
Hungarian Soldier: “Your honour, the Ottomans want to emm… have an appointment with you, they are sort of waiting here already.”
Hungarian King: “Well fast, do you want the Croats or not? Last chance before we’re destroyed.”
Gaius: “Well you don’t leave much of a choice! Fine, we accept it.”

And so Gaius and his 4000 Romans headed back to Rome. Would they get there before lunchtime? Would any more troubles show up? Probably not, but it sure was an exciting trip.

Christoffer Columbus and the discovering of Americas

In the city of Genoa two young men, Christophorus Columbus and Grigori Fransesco were killing time and discussing about their future plans near the city docks. Both had ambitions and both of them were planning to become explorers in the future. Money, adventures and fame would await for them.

Christopher: “You know, after my studies I’ll move to Scotland.”
Grigori: “Scotland?? Why on earth to Scotland? What’ll you do there? Heard some sheep?”
Christopher: “No no, you see, I have this plan…”
Grigori: “Go on.”
Christopher: “India is full rich spices, if I can find a shortcut there I will become a rich man!”
Grigori: “And what exactly does Scotland have to do with India or shortcuts?”
Christopher: “Well as you know, the earth is round. So if I sail north I will eventually end up to south!”
Grigori: “Go on…”
Christopher: “So, if I sail north I will eventually reach south. And what’s in the south then? That’s right! The Cape is in the south! Think of it, no longer would we have to go around the continent of Africa to reach India, we could simply use my shortcut to get to the cape! What do you think?”
Grigori: “That’s just silly. How about this: You sail west until you reach India, wouldn’t that be a shortcut?”
Christopher: “…”
Grigori: “Well?”
Christopher: “That’d never work.”
Grigori: “Well how about a bet? I will sail north and try to reach Cape using your plan and you’ll sail west and try to reach India with mine. How would that sound?”
Christopher: “Hold on, why should you use my plan and I use yours? Even you don't believe your ideas!”
Grigori: “No… no it’s just that, well you see, my skin gets really bad in the warm and I uh, I think it would be nice to visit Scotland and err, I have family in Iceland…”

Eventually, Christopher agreed with this competition. Grigori, supported by James II the king of Scotland, would sail north to reach south, while Christopher, backed by Henry VII Frederick king of England, would sail west to reach east. They wished each other luck at the docks of Amsterdam and sailed to the horizon. That was the last time anyone saw of Grigori Fransesco again. Christopher on the other hand…

Another AAR I have to read! I'm starting to wonder whether I should pray to God to make the days a few hours longer, or I'll run out of time! :)
