OK, so here it is the smoothed English version of the AJFIFU events 17000-17007 (i.e. for the Lombards).

First, three cheers to Ayestheni for doing so much of the work.

Second, I have tried to read through the ifu_mlo.txt to see what triggers and effects these events have and indicated what they are in plain English.

Third, I have substantial changes in mind for some of these events -- indeed, for Italy as a whole. Please see the "Italy" suggestions thread.

Fourthly, note that I use the term Lombards throughout. Langobards is an ugly word and substituting Lombards for it that will be one of the suggestions in the Italy thread.

Naturally, corrections to these texts are encouraged.

I am reserving this post for myself.

Here's a country description for the Lombards (if you wish to include it):

=========

THE LOMBARDS

A Germanic tribe, the Lombards were relatively late arrivals in the region. In 568, under their great king Alboin, the Lombards invaded Italy. The Ostrogoths were quickly overcome, but the Byzantines put up a stiff resistance. By the early 600s, a stalemate had been reached and Italy was partitioned between the Lombards (with capital at Pavia, covering northern Italy, Tuscany, Spoleto and Benevento) and the Byzantines (who ruled Rome, Romagna, Apulia and some coastal enclaves). The Lombards introduced feudalism into Italy and the Lombard king had quite some difficulty controlling his great dukes. The cold war between the Lombards and Byzantines heated up again in the 720s, when the Lombard King Liutprand availed himself of a dissention between Constantinople and her Italian subjects to encroach upon Byzantine territory. Ravenna, the capital of Byzantine Italy, was seized by one of his successors, King Aistulf, in 750. At the Pope's request, the Franks recovered the Byzantine territories from the Lombards, but rather than hand it back to Constantinople, they ceded it to the Pope, creating the Papal States. For the next thirty years, Lombards and Franks jockeyed for control of the Papal States, prompting the eventual conquest and annexation of the Lombard Kingdom by Charlemagne in 774.

======================

1700

(triggered by Franks 15001 and Frankish conquest of Lombardy (389) and/or provinces Marche (391), Romagna (392) and Rome (399))

EVENTNAME17000; The Franks are victorious.
EVENTHIST17000;
The Franks have won all the crucial battles and captured our capital, Pavia. We have no choice but to agree to their demands. Let us immediately cede the provinces of Rome, Romagna and Marche and hope that the Franks will be benevolent towards us!

EVENT17000A;Hand over Rome, Romagna and Marche.
(= cession of provinces to Franks & triggers Franks 15002, ("Promissio"))

=========================

17001

(triggered by Francia 15002B (Franks keep lands))

EVENTNAME17001; Frankish Perfidy (was "Defeated Winners?")

EVENHIST17001;
Those treacherous Franks have not kept their word to the Pope! They seem bent on taking Italy for themselves! Our king Aistulf may have been tricked into ceding the lands, but we shall recover our country from those deceitful hypocrites. Each Lombard warrior willl now fight like ten. We shall expel this perfidious scum from Italy!

EVENT17001A; Long live Aistulf!
(= removes papal cores)

==========================
17002

(Triggered by Francia 15002a; ("Franks create Papal States"))

EVENTNAME17002;Desiderius and the Franks

EVENHIST17002;
Aistulf was weak and the benevolent Franks have confirmed today that the former Duke of Tuscany, Desiderius, should take up the Lombard throne. Finally we are rid of that miserable warmonger. Desiderius has a basically positive attitude towards the Franks and the Papal States. We can hope that the war against Pepin's powerful armies will come to an end soon.

EVENT17002A; Long live Desiderius!
(= removes papal cores & replaces Aistulf with Desiderius)

[NOTE: Historically wrong. Must be corrected!]

========================
17003

EVENTNAME17003;The Pope refuses
EVENTHIST17003;

Carloman, co-king of the Franks and brother of Charles, died in December 771, after a brief illness. The death of Carloman cleared the way for Charles to assume undisputed power. That very same month, Charles was acclaimed by the Frankish high nobility as the undisputed king of the entire Frankish realm. His nephews, Carloman's sons, were thus pushed aside from their rightful inheritance of their father's portion of the realm. Carloman's widow, Queen Gerberga, fled with her children to her father Desiderius's court in Pavia. She was joined by her sister Desideria, Charles's own pregnant wife, repudiated by the Frankish king to clear the way for his third marriage to a daughter of a Frankish noble, Hildegard of Swabia.

Like any good father, Desiderius is angered by Charles's mistreatment of both his daughters. He has promptly demanded that Pope Adrian I anoint his grandsons, the sons of Carloman, as future kings. This presents a grave danger for Charles, as it will give the boys a claim on their father's portion of the Frankish kingdom. That will weaken the Franks and strengthen the Lombards considerably, as the boys will almost certainly cede control, and perhaps even the title, of their lands to their grandfather.

A papal envoy has just arrived with the unfortunate news that the Pope refuses the anointment. This will not do. If the pope will not consent to anoint Carloman's sons out of his own free will, we must compel him to do so by force.

EVENT17003A; Declare war on the Papal States
(= war, triggers Franks 15022)

===========================

17004

(Triggered by Lombard control of two provinces Romagna (392) and Rome (399) & Papal exists & war btw Lombards & Papal)

EVENTNAME17004;The Royal Anointment

EVENTHIST17004;Our Lombard armies are in control of all the provinces of the Papal States. The Pope does not want to see any more suffering among his Christian subjects and finally consents to anoint the sons of Carloman, Desiderius's grandsons, as future kings of the Franks. By this royal consecration, the boys have a legally-sanctioned claim on the southern part of the Frankish realm, their late father's lands. Let us now see if King Charles of the Franks will respect the laws of the Church and deliver the boys' inheritance.

EVENT1; "OK"
(= adds southern French cores & triggers Franks 15023)

=========================
17005

(triggered by Franks refusal to cede, 15023A)

EVENTNAME17005;The Franks defy hereditary right.

EVENTHIST17005;Charles's has refused to yield the southern provinces to the sons of Carloman! For his defiance of the law, the condemnation and imprecations of the Church have fallen on the head of the Frankish monarch and his kingdom. The Christian population of Francia, feaful for their souls, are sure to rise against their impious king. This crisis is perhaps an opportune moment for us to collect our armies and launch an attack on Francia.

EVENT1; "OK"
(= no consequence)

======================
17006

(triggered by Franks's cession of south, 15023B )

EVENTNAME17006; The Franks accept

EVENTHIST17006;

The Franks have accepted the hereditary right of the sons of Carloman and dutifully surrendered the southern provinces of Francia As expected, these inexperienced young boys have transferred those lands to their grandfather, King Desiderius of the Lombards. At last, Charles's humiliation of the boys' mother and their aunt is now avenged. Lombard honor is restored!

EVENT1; "OK"

=============

17007

(triggered by Franks 15022 (war with Lombards) & Franks control Lombardy (389), range 751-814)

EVENTNAME17007; The Collapse of the Realm

EVENTHIST17007; King Charles of the Franks has captured our capital Pavia, deposed our king and had himself crowned with the iron crown of the Lombards! He demands all Lombard nobles pay homage to him as their new king. But Desiderius's son Adelchis has escaped and calls us to resist.

EVENT17007A; Let us become part of Francia. (triggers Franks 15024 (inherit Francia; note: cores not added))

EVENT17007B; Never! We shall fight to the bitter end. (triggers Franks, 15049 (give Francia cores))

[NOTE: Doesn't trigger. ifu_mlo.txt must be fixed so that it is properly triggered (mistakenly assigns control to FRA rather than HAB). Also, Franks 15024 should be fixed to add Italian cores to Francia.]
