OK, so here it is the smoothed English version of the AJFIFU event 18000 (the only Aquitainean event).

Some notes:

-- Gascony should be an independent Basque kingdom in 751, allied to Aquitaine, but not part of it. Should Gascony be conquered, it should not be annexed automatically as Aquitaine was.

-- If Aquitaine chooses vassalship, there should be a renewed rebellion c.770 relating to Hunald's escape.

-- There should be further rebellions in Aquitaine later in the 9th C.

Country Description: Aquitaine

===============

Most of the lands of southwestern France once ruled by the Visigoths were conquered by the Franks in 507. But the Franks remained thin on the ground. They held a few major towns, letting Gothic counts of indecipherable religion and ambiguous loyalty run the rest of it. In 671, the Franks were unable to prevent the Gothic counts from expelling their Frankish vice-roy and electing their own independent Duke of Aquitaine. The Aquitaineans preserved their independence by intervening regularly in internal Frankish conflicts, supporting one side and then the other, whatever it took to prevent peace and unity among the Franks. But in the 720s, the Aquitaineans were suddenly slammed from behind by the Muslim typhoon from Spain. They were forced to turn to the Franks for assistance. In return, the Frankish leader Charles Martel exacted an oath of fealty from Aquitaine, an oath subsequently ignored by the new Aquitainean duke Waifer. But the Franks could not afford to ignore Aquitaine. Its feudal anarchy and porous borders made it a highway for Muslim raids into Frankish territory. In the late 750s, the Franks began taking active steps to secure a more effective bulwark against Muslim Spain. Aquitaine was annexed into Francia in 768, but it would re-emerge again as a sub-kingdom for the younger sons of Frankish kings and made repeated bids for independence.

AQUITAINE EVENT (18000)

=====================

(needs Frank 15004, triggered by Frankish conquest of Aquitaine lands).

EVENTNAME;18000; Aquitaine defeated

EVENTHIST;18000

After conducting a wrenching campaign of unbridled total war, the Franks now occupy our beloved country. Defeated, humiliated, tired of this terrible war and the steep price it has exacted on their lands, the high nobles of Aquitaine have turned on the cause of all this horror and murdered their rebellious duke Waifer. The nobles say there is no reason to defy the powerful Franks any longer and it is high time to submit to annexation. After all, they say, we were Frankish subjects not so long ago.

But Waifer's son Hunald has returned from Gascony and rallied his late father's followers. He has no chance of rolling back the Franks, but should he successfully avenge himself on the treacherous nobles, Aquitaine's honor will be preserved and we might be able to negotiate a vassalship instead.

EVENT18000A Accept the will of the nobles
(= trigger Franks 15006, annexation)

EVENT18000B Execute the traitors!
(= trigger Franks 15021, vassalization)
