Recon are ten I think. Transports 100. I don't know if it is new but there it costs 20 command points for every supply drop which means you can't do many anyway.
Supply drops have cost Command Power ever since CP came in, I think.

The IC cost of transports was slashed dramatically from 180 to 4 IC o_O in 1.12.0 but has now been quintupled back to 20 in the open beta, so they now cost as much as a vanilla CAS. I think the end result is that transports are now painfully expensive but I haven't got my head around it.

Well truth be said China didn´t build planes. At all. It was all soviet or american.
Which is why there's an event giving China planes from the US and the game has a Lend-Lease mechanic. But I'm not complaining about China's ability to build planes. I'm saying that the fixed wing size of 100 makes it difficult for China & other low-industry nations to deploy the small air forces that they have.

You can deploy undersized wings. They are a maximum of 100, but everything still works if you don't have that many.

Has anyone tried modding this wing size to something smaller/bigger yet?
Looks like the relevant code is under common/units/air.txt:

The problem is that new planes will go straight from reserves to undersized wings

Which means you can only have a single wing until it's filled (without using other various tricks)

The back and forth cost of transports is something to take note of, but currently we can build 9 transports using the same resources we used to build 1 before BBA. I personally like it, since transports planes should be a fairly easy build for a nation that can build an air force. I believe that the reason transports cost 180 before was because they were treated a little like a convoy. The player was not building just one transport plane for 180 cost, but an air convoy of sorts. Now, it seems transports are joining the rest of the aircraft as single units and the developers are figuring out the correct cost.

Are transports (and recon planes) also capped at 100?
How do i then make multiple paradrops, or supply several zones at the same time?
(Getting 100+ transports is not usual)
Yes (but they are MUCH cheaper now, my last game I put my normal 1 MIC on Transports and forgot about it, next time I checked I had over 2000 of them in the stockpile) and no (Scouts are 10-plane squadrons instead of 100 plane wings).

Yes, but this still doesnt solve the problem.

im currently playing a facist brazil game, and im at war with the allies. i have enough industry to start getting naval bombers up.

lets say i have 200 naval bombers.
in the past i would be able to do what i wanted, making some odd number of 25-50 plane naval bomber wings, then placing them all along the coast lines where allied shipping is.

now im relagated to only using 100 counts. so instead of being able to spread my planes like i would like to do, i can now only make use of 2 provinces effectively.

its frustrating, taking away player freedom to fix a coding issue with ai stacking? why cant we fix the game code instead of removing features from the player?

Being confident in having a solution for this if we work brainstorming ideas, it is true that the try to fix air issues has created a step back in matter of the flexibility that HOI4 has habituated us from the beginning with air deployment and the roleplaying with major countries and plain strategic gaming with small countries. It is like a downgrade in the concept. I have hope that meanwhile they find a better approach. My concern is that after 6 years, players like me would have the feeling that it is as a setback IMHO.
It is now with the feeling of air control of HOI2 where your air units were treated the same as divisions. But the thing is that HOI4 possibility to display the number of planes that the player wants has become a feature that is feel like stolen.
Some players would not care because play with majors. But small countries players would care a lot.
And my thought is that solution is easy (in my understanding). Now it is like you deploy a unit with planes. If determine the number is allowed and this number is counted as strength, AI would work with 'units' (like with the patch) but player can deploy more 'Units' with less strength. And reproduce the features that we have before. In general, it is trying to get the treatment of air units of Previous Hoi´s and play with strength concept like there (where you can have air units at 33% that now can be treated as 33 planes). The difference will be that player has decision value to fix that strength. At least letting to choose the cap for its own wings.
It is sad that a good new feature as the designer is for me eclipsed with this issue about the feature of deployment. Because what's the point of playing with the designer if you have to wait a lot with your industry in order to see their planes in the field because we need to gather 100?

Basically, 100 wing size is the wrong wing size for most countries. They should have tested it more.

For Germany for instance I wouldn't want 100 heavies or TACs in the same wing. For Italy I don't want all my stuff in one wing. For smaller countries I may not even have 100 of anything!

I would consider modding it to 50 but I think I'm just going to wait for patches or a sale.

This is a baby out with the bathwater situation.

I feel like a better change would be for allied AI to simply leave an overcrowded airfield instead of this. Usually plenty of unused airbases for their crappy, untrained wings.

You can still split air wings, deploy 100 and split twice down to 4 wings of 25. Each wing will reinforce to 100 one after the other, but you can have 100 planes divided up into 4 groups.
Yes but the wings will all be rookie status and will be stuck there due to reinforcing. As well as by making the default 100, most people will have no reserves and will be using obsolete planes, etc.

Also it screws up the default order of battle. You will have to delete all air wings and start over because most start out between 40 and 80 planes per.

It just creates more problems.

Once you reach 1940 it stops mattering for most nations. And is a godsend for managing mid and late game deployment. It was one of the worst parts of the experience, having to click model, then set slider to 800 planes, split by 2 and by 2 and by 2 to get 8x100, and then do it again and add 400 and by 2 and by 2 to fill a 2k airfield.

Getting a way more fun mid and late game is def worth slightly more clunky early game. If you want you can just set one number in a text file to have historical 24-size airwings. Boom, solved.

As I said above, I think the move to fixed wing sizes is worth it. But if you mean the fixed size being set at 100, then I don't think most nations are fielding hundreds of aircraft of each type by 1940.

I've never sat down and counted but in SP I imagine it would only be the Majors and maybe one or two European countries like the Netherlands that can get NF bonuses. In MP you might have different nations (is Canada as Allied air controller still a thing?) but still it will be far from most.

Reviewing all the posts in the thread and my impression is that this is being considered a minor question. The thing it is than having one new feature focused for roleplayig we have another feature that caps air roleplaying. It is a difference that changes strategic planning and IMHO can be implemented, as it is possible to get better performance or internal process, but I feel it imposed without logic.
My hope is that this is a matter that it is in game designer's road map, and it is not now in top of exigencies regarding there is a fresh new launch and game polishing tasks are prioritary. But it will be reviewed in short time.
For any brainstorming consideration, I am open to participate.

It is great having the quick deploy. And if it makes it easier for the AI to manage air field stacking good. But I can't see why they wouldn't give the player the option to make different sizes if they'd like as well.
