Hey some people here are great Historians....

Ok a question I can't seem to find the answer online:

- what is the composition in total number of planes of a Fighter or bomber squadron or Wing in the RAF or USAAF (in WW2), compared to a German KG or JG.

especially in the latter part of the war for the allied ones (1944-1945)

my info on the german part is that a JG or KG is formed of 1 to 4 groups of 30 to 50 planes. but it varies. and is theorical.

for the RAF and USAAF, there are millions of links, but I can't find the one that says. RAF 1st (canadian) squadron is, in 1944, composed of .... 36 Spitfire Mk.VIII and is part of Group N.11... etc.

checked out RAF.gov, etc. can't find it.
perhaps you know other forums that I can check?

IIRC, the number of planes per squadron in the RAF tended to grow as the war went on, not necessarily in the number of planes and pilots in the air, but in the number of planes and pilots in reserve. From 12 to 16 to 24, if I'm not mistaken.

American squadrons tended to be more stable, 16 planes per squadron, three squadrons per group, I think.

German units in WWII went from Kette, to Staffel, to Gruppe, to Geschwader, to Fliegerdivision (later Fliegerkorps), to Luftflotte.
