The raid on London is gamey IMO.

Britain overplayed it's hand by this point. The whole "soft underbelly" strategy of Churchill was a dead-end militarily.

Don't know what one could do to help the AI any more. They had the best generals to start the game, and German divisions in Normany didn't move or attack for nearly a year.

Still, the 2dBOB gives the opportunity to look at air strategy, and after all, this is an Air AAR.

So, is it fun? Is it entertaining? Is it informative? Well, 2 out of 3 isn't bad. \

Enjoy!

Gonna have to agree with Cybvep here, your future strategy relies upon shortcomings of the game...

Come-on. London is a strategic goal. Germany now has 1/10 victory conditions. It's not like the AI is lying down as Germany still has to get to Moscow and Stalingrad. The clock runs out in 1948, so time is on the AI's side too. This AAR must turn and burn from here on out.

That's not much time left then. Either you really got to turn and burn and whatever that means or why not just extend the gametime a bit?

It means to get cracking, get moving, etc. Reason being, this is a game AAR, not a historical or fictional AAR. So, we're fighting the clock and still have a long ways to go.

Last time the undersigned tried a Barbarossa AAR on Hard it was embarrassing, and didn't even make it to Moscow. But, this time is different as there is OOB planning. So, we'll try lighting a fire under the German divisions and advance on a tightly-managed Prussian schedule.

Subscribers want to see good tactical choices and hard-fought battles, not gamey solutions. And so do I. But, intellegence coups and psy-ops are a part of the game too.

Frontal assault tactics will not work against the Red Army--so we'll have to plan carefully to get around their flanks and rear. Think Cannae. This will be done by misdirection; getting the AI to commit to certain battles and certain fronts while delaying the hammer blow until the last possible moment.

Operation Arminius is named after a Germanic King who defeated the great Roman general Varus at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9AD. "... Stratagem was, therefore, indispensable; and it was necessary to blind Varus to their schemes until a favorable opportunity should arrive for striking a decisive blow..." British historian Edward Shepherd Creasy (1812–1878)

Lots going on. If I got the gist of things right, the British are either your equals or slightly better, due to their home-court advantage, better experience and doctrine? Speaking strictly about the air war, of course - the Royal Navy put in a rather poor showing.

Anyway, you announced Sea Lion, so let's see how that plays out. Mere raid, or more? :)

"Quintili Vare, legiones redde!"

I don't like Sealion either, but it seems the only way to secure some resources. Though if the allied AI had any clue your army would be blocked on the Island with a couple of carrier battle groups saying hello :)

MOre eagerly awaiting Arminius at this point.

May-June '46: Operation Sealion

Untitled00.jpg

Operation Sea Cub was an unmitigated success! High Command now activates operation Sealion with the exception of Ireland, which is still neutral. Germany will not invade Ireland unless they pose a serious threat.

AIR CAMPAIGN OVER EUROPE:

The Allies attacked Venezia, The Soviets attacked Breslau.

OPERATION SEALION—Invasion of England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland:

About five (5) corps of battle-hardened troops from the Italian campaign had been stationed on the Channel coast awaiting orders. With no sightings of either British or American fleets, these troops began landings in southern England with the primary goal of capturing all Channel ports from Dover to Plymouth.

Untitled01.jpg

(above) The Allies invade the south of France (again) to divert attention from the British home islands. Two (2) divisions of heavy paratroops supported by heavy tanks and one (1) division of armored infantry were more than enough to put an end to this expeditionary landing.

Untitled02.jpg

(above) Operation Sea Cub concludes with the surrounding of London and the first landings on the Channel coast. Marines in Southend are relieved by a corps of infantry supported by heavy weapons for the final assault on London. The capture of Dover now becomes the marine's principal objective.

Untitled03.jpg

(above) A British fleet under Adm. Cunningham finally makes an appearance. Tripitz and escorts sally forth from their base at Den Heig (red arrow). There are no attacks by British CAGs as Germany has achieved air superiority over the Channel. The British fleet is turned back, and the invasion continues . . .

Untitled04.jpg

(above) The British put up almost no resistance and by mid-May the Channel ports are secured.

Untitled05.jpg

(above) London falls and the British surrender “by the kilometer.” Garrison troops pose in front of an abandoned armor column. Almost all of southern England is now in German hands.

Untitled06.jpg

(above) (TOP) By June most of Great Britain is in German hands, and German marines land outside Belfast in Northern Ireland (red arrow). (BOTTOM) The Allies attempt to regain a foothold in the north with a landing at Durness in Scotland. But, this is yet another doomed expedition as occupation forces will prove too numerious to overcome.

Next Time: OOB Operation Artimius

No Ireland? :-( Though they are not much of threat anyway, I think it'd be more realistic... unless you hand them northern Ireland for joining the Axis.

Impressive. With the use of cavalry, too. Do the Japanese have any shot at India?

After losing China, not a chance. They are still very tough, and have kept the American and British carrier fleets very busy (so far as I know). I can de-brief on the Japanese AI at game's end if you remind me.

Yes, this was kept a close secret. I was surprised nobody suggested this.

Hehe I usually suggest it in every AAR I read. I've had invasions fail, but never when Britain is the target. People usually get scared off by the RN, but it's less of a worry than you might expect.

Something that might be helpful is if the USA actually staged their units in Britain before launching invasions of Europe, but they don't have to since they get to attack Europe directly from North America even though us poor humans don't get that option.

EDIT: Any idea why the Paratroop counters have such different values from your Marines? Usually all the three Special Forces types share the same combat values.

Good job with Sea Cub! :)
Where was the rest of the RN? That puny resistance it put up was almost not worth mentioning. IRL the Kriegsmarine feared the RN, and with good reason.
