What is it good for?

Well, obviously it decides if your bombers prefers targeting units in combat or those waiting in reserve.

But if you are happy with a mix of both, is it worth researching? In other words: Is forward air control and battlefield interdiction both researched at level 4 the same as both at level 1, or does it bring additional benefits.

The same question can be asked for bomber targeting focus and fighter targeting focus.

I usually don't research those, simply because I don't understand what they do.

Does anybody know?

When you are happy you don't have to research it. Those modifiers will just cancel each other. So either leave it or focus on one of them or switch later in the game when you are not happy with previous focus.

What they do is exactly what is written. Don't look for any sort of mystery there. When fighters fight with mixed air army, they will prioritize bombers/fighters according to your chosen focus.

Don't think I read that when I read the manual!?!

So any research in those are wasted unless you have a very specific plan???

I thought they improved your chance to find targets of that type instead of not finding any, but if its instead of finding the other type I don't think I'll bother with those any more.

Agreed. Need a definitive answer on this one.

When they increase priority they just make them search for specific target and nothing else. At least that is what came out from similar debate some time ago

In this case, you get better at each. I noticed in my last AAR that the effectiveness of my airraids went up as both improved. If you have to chose, one reason to like the interdiction tech is that supports the mission which seems to kill the most - assume as it tends to hit units that have no dug in bonus. So if you are using airpower for attrition rather than just as a combat bonus, its the best mission and it is definitely worth researching the tech.

He's not talking about the mission improving techs: interdiction, logistical strike, etc. Those are all good-- with the possible exception of ground attack vs interdiction: these are very similar missions so its generally only worth researching and using one.

He's talking about the focus techs, which do nothing for you other than change what target you attack. In fact researching both of these techs has the same effect as researching neither of them-- if they are even at 3 then the target choice will be the same as if they are even at 0. Personally, I perfer my planes to pick an even mix of targets, so I don't waste a single research point on focus techs.

If this is true I'll probably research one fighter focus and use my tech for other stuff then

Well go ahead and reverse-engineer the .exe file then. Nobody has ever proven through testing that they have any meaningful effect. You necroed two ancient threads with the same content, with the sole purpose of demanding "evidence" 6 years later.
