I play the game entirely as the US in single player mode. I am still trying to understand how the AI can be so stupid as your ally and so intelligent as your enemy. Its so frustrating to build a defensive line along a river looking for a weak point to attack across, and watch your allies look for ways around trying to advance, usually by attacking in an area where they are outnumbered, leaving areas undefended for the enemy to advance. Its so frustrating having to leave armor behind your advance to block breakthroughs in areas that have already been taken. It would be much better if you were allowed to control allied troops acting as supreme commander in areas in which you have operations.

The AI is a sensitve issue since the 1980 up to today. Normaly you have 2 Options for the AI:

1. You let the AI Cheat (AI knows all when the Scenario starts and have more Ressources, Military or so from beginning on)

2. You let the AI Stupid / Dump (AI dosen´t make much and you win the Scenario / Game much easy)

Paradox and all other Game Companys won´t do that anymore. So they deciced to make an AI which is in the Middle and should play as a Human as good it can. The AI now research more usefull, try to get a stable economy, fight better with Strategy and Tactics, is in some Games Learning from your Playstile (Doom is such an Example) and much more. It´s working more or less and get improved, refited, changed in every Patch and DLC.

What you shouldn´t do is playing a-historically and fully manually. That´s a problem for the AI in Hoi 4 but don´t ask other players and the Devs why. They try to fix the first one, but for the Second the Player is in Charge.

If you are the faction leader then you can request forces from your allies. It's not quite the same as being supreme commander but if you take enough of their forces they do start to play more defensively and stop throwing themselves against the enemy.

Paradox have mentioned in the past that they prefer suicidal attacks to empty stalemate. If the odds are reasonable the AI will be reasonably smart. If they are boxed in the AI will attack in the hope of getting lucky. That was mentioned a long time ago so no idea if it still applies.

Alas, I wish I could be in control of all ground operations. That would make it more strategic.

Whereas AI prefer opportunism, as the player I want the AI to just hold the lines. Not to self destruct their armies in an attack thru bad territory.

At least as Germany the player can leave their "allies" out of it.

so stupid as your ally and so intelligent as your enemy

Wait, the AI is an intelligent enemy?

giphy.gif

I kid the AI, but seriously, enemies make the same mistakes as allies. If you are playing the US, no doubt German advantages in IC, manpower, and tech help cloak AI mistakes behind a wall of well equipped units manning the line. But never forget that it's still vulnerable to the same mistakes.
