Well I think that's %90 a bug and not WAD but I post this here anyways, just to confirm.
So after finding out that AI can actually mis-calculate his army strength , now I guess AI miscalculates AI strengthes when declaring a coalition war as well.
Let me first show you a picture, then I'll get into the details.
A totally stupid war yeah? If you think they counted my other war and attacked that's why, it's not very possible because I've been wrecking my enemies in that other war with a current score of %42 in favor of me. Anyway.
Now when I saw this I thought "OMG AI stupidly attacking again" but then I gave it another thought because they really have improved the AI , and those suicidal attacks happen rather rare compared to early versions.
Now let me explain how I theorise that it's miscalculation...
There are lots of nations in a coalition against me. But only some of them are in the war above. Why? Because I got another coalition war, and a country can be at war with another country only in a single war. So the rest of the coalition that joined the coalition after the war started, didn't join the coalition.
And just a photo from the first coalition war. The reason my side seems weak compared to the other photo is because France isn't in this war due to his other war with a member of a coalition.
All those are a concidince? I think not
Back to my theory : The AI calculated that the WHOLE coalition would join in his side and that's why it attacked. It's not his fault, because all those nations were truly in a coalition against me. And the AI doesn't know them being at war with me would affect the result. So it just attacked.
My Suggestion : In any coalition war, remove the coalition members from the coalition immediately upon starting the war, so that the coalition outside of the war doesn't miscalculate. I guess they stay in the coalition to get the special "Coalition member" modifiers, but that could be solved in another way, couldn't it be? In any case, I don't see how it can be WAD.
