Hey,

I ran into a kind of fatal flaw with the AI. In multiple playthroughs with the new MtG DLC i never encountered any tier III ships in naval combat. So i took my last game and looked through the AIs research trees and production queues and found out: It really hesitates to build and or research modern ships.

From my Imperial German playthrough beating the US in 43:

German research and production queue:

US (puppet) research and production queue:

hoi4_3.png

Japan research and production queue:

As you can see, the AI did barely research any 1940 techs and has not even built any 1940 ships. I did not once see a 1940 CV or SS from the USA and couldnt find one in their fleet after the war, neither are any in its production.
It is still building obsolete early hulls in 1943!

Please fix Paradox ;)

In my game, as of 1946 the US still hadn’t built any anything beyond 1940’s tech. I’m not sure they even refit any of their older ships because they kept thowing them at me - and losing. I changed the names of the hulls so I could monitor losses, and from what I could tell the were using 1936 technology. I’ll tag over later, but I suspect whatever naval reasearch the US may have embarked on is pretty minimal.

So yeah, I’d have to concur. For major naval powers the AI seems to be doing a pretty horrible job when it comes to research.

This is a known and reported issue. They are working on it, as evident from the change from infinite production to 1 off queues.

Assuming the AI also needs naval experience to update ships, it may be having trouble there, too. I can barely get enough experience to update ships once the war starts.

Naval commanders accrue experience at a horribly slow rate. I’m not sure how many major naval engagements it takes to qualify as a veteran, but I only managed to acquire 2 new traits for one naval commander over a 6-year period.

I opened a bug report on 1.6.2 regarding this. The AI created a 1940 CV, but it failed to add an additional flight deck so the 1940 version was more expensive and had the same stats as the 1936 version. So, it picked the 1936 version after finishing the previous 1936 CV. It did create a new line, so the fix in 1.6.2 works but now it’s an issue with the templates....which we’ve seen all too often on land templates.

I still have no idea how this DLC made it through QA. It’s hard to believe MtG was playtested to any degree.

1947 Japan fighting against ITA, GER, ENG.
4 SHBB in the same task force  Many heavy engagements
8/500 progress on Ironside.

Many egregious bugs could have been noticed by trying features at least once, such as exiles unable to get convoys, or the AI Behavior rules not working for USA.

This has been an issue even on EAI until recently, but it looks like EAI has fixed it. Now the good news is that with EAI the AI will build modern ships. The bad news is that it is almost entirely destroyers and some BBs with Japan building super heavy BBs. Also Japan kinda stops building them later because they fail at trade and were running 200 steel deficits while not getting the 60 nearly free steel from Manchukuo. I ran a cheat to give them 10k convoys and manually traded with Manchukuo for the steel. After a month I tagged back and they removed the trade.

You certainly would think so, but they don't apparently. I don't know how common that is. I just finished a practice buildup for war game to experiment with other paths. Japan is tradding with them in 1940. No idea if that will continue into 43-45 or not.

It’s strange because the AI seems to avoid outdated equipment in most other cases. With a few exceptions. But it does have terrible resource management with France and Britain both just draining tiny fuel reserves dry in less than a few months.

I don’t think it can handle all the new research in MtG. For that matter, I know I can’t. I’m continually falling behind everywhere with the changes - especially in doctrines. The 15% reduction hasn’t really helped. You used to be able to pour a decent amount of research into all 3 branches. Now you’re lucky to be able to do the same with 2.
