AI Wars(TM) is a new series of AAR's that are based on improved AI's designed for V.I.P(Victoria Improvements Project) and Vanilla Victoria. First AI-Wars(TM) concentrates on war between England and China in late 30's and early 40's.

Game options: normal/normal

England uses alpha version of new EcoMil(TM) AI, that is designed to optimize AI peformance in war and with economy. So much for the introduction, let's move to the battle now...

Duke of Saxe-Weimar was invited by the English to see the progress made in China. Accordingly, this review is based on the writings of Duke Albert I of Saxe-Weimar.

Map of Wild-East in April 1839
Intro.png

England is currently engaged in war against Burma, with hopes to strenghten and widen the border with Chinese, who they have been having uneasy relationship for quite some time now.

burma_beg.png

Attack against Burma was launched from two sides. Northen flank boasted over 30.000 soliders, while eastern front was bolsterd with over 50.000 men avaiable. Weakest point in English offence was the southern front that was almost non-existant, there wern't even enough men to protect Yeh form even the smallest Burma counter-attack. Considering that England high command ordered all troops to march as fast as possible, to avoid any Burma counter-attacks on the southern front.
- Operation commenced on the 2nd of April 1839-

burma_cnt.png

Exactly two months later, English troops have occupied almost 56% of Burmans national territory. While the situation on the eastern and northen front couldn't be better, souther front has collapsed and cities in Yeh are under siege. Even according to the best scenario, English troops are unable to stop Yeh from falling to "evil" Burma hands...

Same time as war in Burma raged on, rahter nasty incidents lead England and China into war(July 1839). England was now in quite difficult position, because front against Chinese was rather vague and unprotected. General Jhonson of the Great English Navy proposed a bold plan, to invade China from four postions.

July 1839
china_pln.png

Plan was to be executed as soon as possible. A large force of troops(40.000) were to be landed on the beaches of Ninguta(1) - area that holds the riches of coal. Next target was the stronghold of Tijanin(2), succesful beachead there would give oppurtunities to capture Beijin, captial of China. Third assault was to be concluded against fortresses in Guangzhou(3) and Shaozhou(4), forces in the west are unfortunately tied down by burma for quite some time, so everything relies on succesful landings. A Large group of Chinese irregulars(200.000 men) were spotted, few days ago, in Xiachang(5), moving fast towards English border.
Only time will tell if the planned invasions work out as planned and if the english can protect their border

October 1839
burm_chin.png

As expected, Chinese band of 200.000 men managed to trow out 10.000 english defenders from Dibrugath in just few days. Just when quick advance was in hand Chinese generals started to have trouble planning and executing succesful attacks . Men, delirious of pillaging and looting, started to disobey orders and slowed future advancement to crawl. This gave England time to gather troops and begin their own offensive.
General Jhonson reported that he had some hard time organizing all the ships for assaults, but promises to land in Ninguta this december .

General Jhonson managed to land his forces in Ninguta as promised. 62.000 men and supplies were moved to Ninguta - New base of opertaions in Northen-China.
Fast movement caused panic among chinese generals and soliders, to make things even brighter, 30.000 chinese soliders were cought in pocket nearKhabarovsk.

Works fine for me. I sure hope that the AI does better then the normally do in the game. Perhaps the English and Chinese will actually stop fighting the war after a few years.

Troops finally landed on the beaches of Tijanin(1), thus breaking the door to Bejing open. Even more notable are the Brithish advancements in Northen-China(2), where over 60.000 Chinese soliders are either caputerd or fallen in battle. It is only matter of weeks before the whole Chinese force in north collapses.
Brithish forces in the East have overecome the chinese forces and are pushing their way towards Central-China.

Brithish advancement in the North is somewhat slowed down by the chinese partisans and unexpected reinforcements in the area.
Meanwhile succesful beached was formed in Guangzhou(1) and Shaozhou(2). There is only light Chinese resistance expected in the area.
Unfortunately it seems that China has managed to gather over 170.000 men to defend the capital and have surrounded forces in Tijanin(3)

Not much has changed in Northen-china, but things look rather bad for the Brithish forces near Beijong. Recently some transport ships appeard to friendly waters to offer their support.
In Southern-China everything is working out as planned, almost all provinces are captured and those few left, will soon fall.

I'm sorry, but I'm not impressed. I saw the same result in a hand-off game in vanilla v1.03 . Except that the UK AI landed in Weihaiwei, from where they were able to operate sucessfully, instead of Tijanin.

well as said i'm constantly improvng the ai. Difference between vanilla ai and special England-China-war-Ai is the fact that England has succesfully invaded China in 17 games out of 19. With vanilla ai this ratio is much less. I must say that this game that AAR is based on is a dissapointment for me as well . Run another game with little more tweaked ai:

I've seen the Vanilla 1.02 Brit AI do this as well but only once, and it was much later in the game, not in 1836. landings from 2 points, HongKong, and Weihaiwei. and the thrust through burma.

they would have succeded but I countered ( I was playing Japan) by invading further north and cutting Beijing off so they couldn't annex. they sat there for over 2 decades untill accepting a peace offer leaving them with about 5 provinces.

but your right it was the only time I've ever seen China conqured by the AI... 1 out of what 20 odd games?

not so sure I'd want a more effective Brit AI though... they have enough of a lead already.
