The only way* to fix that problem is for Paradox to develop AI that can perform pattern recognition at near human levels, so it can recognize the front overlap and adjust accordingly, either by shortening or merging the fronts. I wouldn't hold my breath on that one.

That's a bit of an overstatement. On the overlapping fronts question there are probably some "good enough" practical solutions that don't require "pattern recognition at near human levels". Perhaps if two fronts are identical then merge them, perhaps auto merge front lines immediately after naval invasions land. That should cover most cases.

Not a bad idea. How do you code it so that it isn't also a great way to merge tank, infantry, and special forces armies? (With the potential extra bonus of putting your panzer leader and commando generals on cooldown while General Infantry Scrub takes command of 50+ divisions.)

It would be helpful when it is possible to draw army borders beyond the frontlines . So only divions could move or attack between theses borders in an area of operation for the army. So the sector of operation is limited. Also it would be great to cluster divisons in a an army to a an army corps an give them different tasks. So one corps has to hold frontline an another corps could secure a flank and one is in reserve and reinforce troops in the frontline when a breakthrough is in progress or to set up a new defensive line.
It would be much easier for the AI just to handle the corps and keep the belonging divisions together.
Also attacking could be more fun and realistic. Like the German tank armies had at least one armord corps Armeekorps (mot.) this n has the task for the breakthrough and the AI could combined the armored divions there than followed by a corps to secure the flanks.
