Except for haveing broken the USA [it apparantly can't handle japan joining the allies and then outright ignoreing it] the AI in doomsday amazes me. i've got it on the lowest difficulty settings, and while it's not exactly a challange to beat at that level, the computer players are actually acting Intelligently [well, except that they refuse to accept any sort of peace where I gain anything.]
examples:
a large japanese fleet, includeing the yamoto and several aircraft carriers, submarines, etc and many transports, carrieing a marine army [which i picked up in tel aviv. they'd marched with two infantry armys the whole way accross asia. different story] attempts to make an amphibious landing in italy, hopefully opening that rout up to the allies.
the attack is a failure. a Vichy French CARRIER GROUP of all things, intersepted and sank it, all save a single aircraft carrier.
that amazed me.
the French government never liked me, and still doesn't, but it's army seems to love me
right from when i, as the japanese, joined the allies and liberated manchu.. thingy... before starting the war with nationalist china, the french have been.. rediculously intelligent and capable. for all that they rolled over and died in France, in Asia [and western russia, now!] they seem almost as visious as the japnese. and they fight Smart.
the Germans are fighting smart too. while i win more battles and acchive more strategic encirclements and so on, being a human player and haveing achived technological supremacy in the realms of infantry and tanks [MBTs in 1945, anyone?] mostly at the expence of my navy and airforce, the AI still manages to pull of intelligent tactics. i had one of my armys [included two of my then only 3 MBT devisions] encircled and destroyed by the germans. they actually took the surrounding territory before attacking.
well, it's now 1952, and berlin is a radioactive crater care of a japanese ICBM carrying the worlds first nuclear weapon in 1950, launched from mid russia, somewhere. the germans still arn't giveing up, despite slowly loseing ground in russia. to the north, the americans [very slowly.. as in almost not at all] and the british [due to boundry issues, expanding japanese territory] are expanding into scandinavia, to the south, romania is japanese territory. in the center kiev is the front lines.
another display of intelligence: with the communist soviet union [since long deceased] all set to crush them and controling half their territorys, and the germans being aggressive and takeing over norway and headed in their dirrection... the Fins made peace and joined the commintern. kept them out of german hands longer than you'd expect, and bizarely they were the LAST nation in the commintern to fall.
totaly a-historical, but i guess they saw the germans as a bigger threat.
these are just some example from one game. like i said, the US are being total morons due to the lack of a japan or USSR to fight, but on the up side, at least they're not bombing their allies in this reality.
so yeah, over all, i'm very impressed.
on a random and barely relivant note: yay me. i finaly signed up and posted on paradox's forums. i've been reading several AARs [well, only two lately] but this is the first time i've actually posted anything, so expect to see mroe of me at a later date.
