Does or can the AI for a country have hardcoded preferences for specific National Ideas or types of advisors? If so, that seems like it would go a long way toward preserving the historical "flavor". For example, Venice focusing on Naval and Trade, or the Ottomans on Land. Any betas or Johans care to comment?

Second that question. Or would nations evolve as they gain new territory (perhaps a Switzerland with many ports may focus on a navy, say).

OT, but on national idea, who here thinks Japan should go QftNW? :D

cheers

Yes, I was just thinking about this myself. I'm wondering if the AI gets "Deus Vult" will it be more likely to crusade. Or, as you say will a crusader state be more likely to get the national idea "Deus Vult".

Very interesting question. Considering how AI has been handled in previous Paradox games though, my first guess that the AI would not be so dynamic as to change it's policies according to shifting geopolitical position.

If it doesnt work as the topic starter wants, does this mean a country that is set on Naval dominance will still focus on naval techs etc even when it has lost coastal provinces lets say a 100years ago?

Well, if a country set for Naval Dominance has lost all his coastal provincies, I guess when the AI tries to spend the money on Naval and can't, it will spend otherwise. I guess it is a bit too much to expect the AI to be dynamic to the point of evaluating various intermingled aspects of its strategic position and adapts the decisions based on that.

Its 2007 this should be the next step in AI development if you ask me,its not that hard to do , i think this was already done in HOI 2.

Perhaps, but lets not set our expectations of Paradox too low. ;)

No, it was not dynamic. It had a clear set of thresholds that controled some general and specific behaviours, which is very different from a "true" AI.

Nevertheless, I guess a "true" AI for a dozen of countries, considering a game as complex as EU, would bring any PC to its knees, let alone talk about 200 different ones.

I guess Paradox would need years to make some serious attempt at coding such AI given the games complexity.

Back in my university days I went half mad coding one of those AIs to play the 4-in-line against an opponent. In the end it was mediocre at best and it was vulnrable to some serious exploits.

I don't hold out an absurd hope for the AI to switch strategies based on a finely-tuned appreciation of the strategic situation, but I think that a more sophisticated version of HoI2's AI switching events would be both appropriate and a major step forward. England with swaths of territory on the Continent should give deep thought to those army-boosting ideas, while a more historical version should be aiming at trade and tech.

I guess the AI's selection of national ideas (and governments) works just like the dynamic monarch system which is based on probability. For example Venice would surely more than 90% of the time go for naval and trade.

The national ideas that a country has when it starts at the beginning of a game are contained in the country text files. However, I do not know how the AI works beyond that point :)

It is good to know that!

Can you tell us if more national ideas appear as the time passes? And if that is the case, each country can have different national ideas as the time passes?

I'm quite sure all NIs are available for all countries all the time. To me that's their charm.

Yes, this appears to be the case. :)

The one about not needing a CB to attack a nation not of your religion seems quite good. Basically that'll be like Spain in EUII...
