I played my first game on Very Easy as USA just to research to nukes and blow up the world, as a learning experience. I ignored Europe aexcept to pass tech along to the Brits and French.

Obviously they passed it along to Germany, because by April 1941 Poland had defeated and annexed Germany.

Just as obviously this a-historical result is the product of the way I played, not some basic flaw in the game. Now I just have to hope Japan attacks me or the Commies get up to something so I can fight somebody. My war entry is 73%, Japan is fighting the Netherlands, and the UK/France are fighting (one province) Nationalist Spain and Italy.

Wierd result, the experience with the tech tree was worth the time I spent, however, which is what I was really looking for.

Oh, plus the chance to nuke everytone I could. I'll do that tomorrow.

Edit: I have screenshot but not the storage space or the knowledge of how to attach it :(

Pretty much the same thing, isn't it?

Seriously though, you must have given a heck of a lot of stuff to the Allies. I'm not even entirely sure I believe you. :)

Is Japan an Axis country? If not your game could end soon, since if the Axis (or another alliance) gets completely eliminated then it is all over.

I think it's all fun to watch. After all, if the AI just followed history...how boring would that be? As well as impossible, since the player would be very hard-pressed to follow history and most likely wouldn't pull it off.

Yeah, but those pesky Poles are tough customers. When I played Germany it took me 6 months to defeat them in 1936, and by the end of this battle, I was scrapping the bottom of the barrel for troops. . .

Why won't those Poles ever learn. . .

:D

The AI is crazy.

If you look at the polish and Germans armies organisationlevel you see that poland has no chance in hell to win that war.. But an AI is an AI :)
Agreed.

The organization level of the Germans seems sooooo incredibly high I don't see how they could ever lose... My invasion of Poland I lost nearly no strength from any of my divisions (down to 94 during a night assault over a river into a forested province :D). A pity they had no tanks. ;)

AI bug

It could easy, if France has entered war before Poland. In that case AI Germany has generated front and has sent all forces on war with France. When Poland has entered war, AI had no armies in a reserve, and the Polish armies have occupied Germany.

It is all because of serious bug: AI can not take an army from front. If can be corrected by saving game and reloading it, then AI reforms fronts and game will go normally. Poland any more will not win.

Personally, i think it is obvious-When you are playing on very easy, it weakens the opposition, and b/c the Poles are considered to be 'on your side' by the AI, it does not make the Poles weaker. Even then, it probably wouldn't happen, but it is possible, some things in this game, believ it or not, do happen randomly!

I am personally just getting a bit tired of all the americans complaining-The patches are to come, and they are FREE! Also, you have the game a month plus b4 we get them! So, if i were you, i would remember that a) you bought the game, knowing that it wouldnt be perfect in version 1.00 or 1.01, and b) you get it befor the rest of the world, at the expense of being semi-betas.

If you had researched alot of land and air doctrines that might explain it since they increase the organisation level. If the allies passed that on to the poles they would have better troops than the germans.

If you top that off with some other techs like infantry guns and stuff like that, I can see why the germans were beaten.

I hate to admit it, but the AI captured Berlin TWICE when I was playing Germany! The first time 99% of my forces were in France and the lowlands when Poland joined the Allies and I did not notice until I started loosing provinces. Finally, when I could divert a few units and with my Slovak allies to attack Poland, I left an opening, which their cavalry unit slipped through and captured Berlin again. Needless to say the firing squads were quite busy after that fiasco… Not bad programming really. AI is very bad in most areas, but it does make like a beeline for the capital if possible as it should always do.

Bingo! Poland have a big but fairly bad army, but if they would be improved with new tech and doctrines they would be in for a even match with Germany.

First off, I am not complaining :p If there's a problem I know it will be fixed, and it may well be a function of the Very Easy/Normal setting I was using.

OTOH I am a little concerned that changes might be needed. I focused my research on everything but land tech. It wasn't til about 2 years into the game (1938) that I had high enough war entry to afford pretty much every tech available to me.

Many times when I finally gave land tech to UK/France the UK, and sometimes France, already had it. So I really don't think I added much to Poland's land tech (though the UK/France had plenty of research budget left for land tech as I gave them everything else).

Hopefully I'll get to fight someone.

Just to state up front a couple of things...

First, I dont own HOI yet, so I havent had an opportunity to play.
Second, by no stretch of the imagination am I a strategic genius.

However....

If 99% of your forces are tied up fighting the French, I am sure the Polish army can easily take out whatever meager border police you have in the east and take Berlin.

This isnt a fault of the game, but a fault of poor decision making. My guess is that the majority of complaints of HOI are arising from situations just like this.

And this is important that PG has posted this. If anything, it proves that the AI can do some smart, common sense things, as PG stated.

Excellent post PG!!! Have fun and roll over those pesky Polish lancers for me!!! :D

Germany should not defeat Poland in 1936 but only in 1939 when their army was indeed much better (while the Polish was rotting away...)... Before 1936 Poland possibly made even better chances to defeat Germany irl than the contrary... So it is imo not a surprise that it is hard to defeat the Poles when attacking them already in 1936...
But anyway, Poland annexing Germany is veeerrrryyyy cool :D

All glory to Poland! :)

Seriously, that is a concern. As much as I would love us to dominate Europe, fact is we never, ever could. Not in a million years.
