In CK 2 alliances are through marriages and family bonds. Marry into the counties/ duchies/ kingdoms you want to ally. Who're you playing as? Sometimes kings and emperors don't want to marry their children t counts or dukes (if they don't happen to be very powerful dukes).

I've modded the demo to start in 850 (only 2 kings around), even when I'm the Duke of half of Italy I have little counts on my border who are not impressed by my ruler who has maxed out castles and mercs on permanent pay

impress? you mean whenever you try to marry your family to theirs they keep rejecting you? what is the negative modifiers? desires better alliance? are you proposing a normal marriage or matrimonial one?

The AI doesn't care if you have the largest army in the world all they care about are your titles, prestige, opinion and so on... which is why I seem to win most of my wars lol...

Definitly you should be able to mod this kind of behavor of the AI..but currently it's impossible.

Sucks that the AI so often rejects marrying porposals because of "desires a better alliance". So unrealistic, espacially if you are playing smaller counts or even dukes. Often I was forced to marry off my dukal heir to a courtier of course with massive prestige loss. Annoying

It could be toned down just a notch. I'm okay not marrying into higher tiers, but those of equal rank or lesser refusing is kinda annoying. The AI refuses to marry my super awesome dynasty members only to later marry some random duches.

I find getting good alliances is waaaaaaaay too easy.

Emperors seem way too eager to marry their children off to my count's children, even though the resulting alliance is nearly useless for him, not to mention the prestige hit he takes, and the fact that marrying so far below your station is highly irregular.

In general, having good relations helps alot.

There seems to be a real lack of female (in particular) children at the very start of the game, especially in certain parts of the world (such as Ireland). I expect that to remedy itself over the course of a game, but at the very start there is almost no options in the 'realm' filter that don't provide a prestige hit. You end up having to marry some far-flung character in Denmark or Poland what have you. =(

Normal marriage. When I am the biggest, most prestigious, most heavily armed realm on the map I very much wonder what "better" ally they are looking for

I've seen something odd with this as well in the demo. I was playing as the King of Poland and trying to marry my daughter off the son of the HRE. Two thing were odd, first it said something like "Good relations ++++" then "Princess is a good age ++" then "Princess has good skills ++" on the minus side it said "Desires a better alliance -----" "Base reluctance --" So I had 8+'s and 7-'s but the HRE still said no. Also it was odd since we already had an alliance as I married the guys sister.

Seriously, how does that weak country expect to get a better alliance than me?

Playing as Brittany, I had had zero issue with finding marriages giving alliances.

I noticed strong differences though as some allies would welcome the help while others would totally ignore me. Cancelling the advantage I expect from the alliance, being offered opportunities to seize land.

Better is a loose word.

When a big country offers alliance to a small country, maybe it is perceived as an veiled attempt to absorb the smaller side. A better alliance would be between countries of similar strength, not a one way street.

Smaller countries, maybe vassalization over alliance is expected as the common relationship to a stronger country.

I don't know if this is the cause, but in this scenario marrying his daughter would have netted the HRE no new alliance since you already had one with him. Marrying his sister and his daughter to the same dynasty is one less potential alliance for him.

Not that odd. Children are material for diplomacy. If you are already allied with a house, it is better to use your scarce left children to secure another alliance or improve a relationship with a vassal.

Better is a loose word once again as no criteria of choices are given.
