It was considered for thinning out the beach defenses. They thought a few days would clear out the radiation back then.

The US didn't have anywhere near enough bombs to use tactically. Basically Truman bluffed the Japanese into thinking that we had enough/could produce enough to level the rest of Japan, when we had used up all we had after Nagasaki. Now they might have had more by 1946, when Coronet was planned (invasion of Honshu), but probably not by Olympic (Kyushu).

The early bombs hardly produced any fallout, so there really wasn't that much danger after a few days. Most people who died of radiation after the bombs died of alpha or beta radiation, not the gamma that is associated with fallout. As detonated as air bursts, Fat Man and Little Boy didn't kick up much dust to create fallout, which is why air bursts are referred to as "self-cleansing." What there little there is gets distributed into the stratosphere and spread extremely thinly around the globe.

With modern thermonuclear weapons the fireball from the initial blast kills anyone who might be affected by the alpha and beta radiation, since the blast is so large. It also means that it kicks up more dust to become falllout. Even still, ground bursts are far dirtier than air bursts.

Basically, it all depends on how much dirt/debris is caught up in the initial fireball, since that is when it can fuse with radioactive isotopes and become fallout. If it doesn't then the radiation dissipates relatively quickly. Even with large amounts of fallout only a few weeks are needed to allow limited exposure to become safe.

As terrible as nuclear weapons are (I'm not saying they should ever be used again) individually they aren't the world enders that most people seem to think they are. Now if all 3000 that the US and Russia still have deployed were detonated...

I do remember reading that MacArthur almost resigned after being denied the use of nukes in the Korean War. He wanted to nuke the North Koreans before the 'UN' forces invaded; then he wanted to nuke the Chinese when they joined the war. Thankfully, clearer heads prevailed and both requests were denied. :D

Why the sad face they started the war?

Yes, so obviously all Japanese deserved to die.
Luckily the USA will always be there so save us from evil, actually we should just give up our identity and always listen to the States, in their infinate wisdom they always know whats best for humanity.

Replace "japanese" with "people who argue about the morality of the atomic bombings for THE TEN MILLIONTH TIME on a videogame website" and I'd agree with you.

Just about every part of this game doesnt work as designed. Makes me wonder if Johan or any PI bigwigs actually sat down on a weekend and tried to play the game before release. Shouldnt this be troubling?

So its ok to drop 2 nukes on cities to kill civilians becouse US dident have guts to fight fair fight?

Accusing Americans of not having the guts to fight a fair fight? Tell me, if Poland had a nuke (or two) in 1939, do you think they would have used them against, let's say, Berlin and Dresden in order to prevent the wholesale slaughter of their defending troops?

Or would they have not used them, preferring a "fair fight" against the Werhmacht?

Just saying. The commonly used justification for dropping the bombs is the many tens of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of American casualties that would have been incurred had we invaded the home islands to stop the war - not to mention the potential for further civilian casualties as a result of total war-style firebombing of even MORE cities, etc.

Alex, you do understand that an invasion of Japan would have resulted in millions of deaths? An ungodly number from starvation and disease amongst the Japanese public? As horrible as the 2 bombings were, your option would have been far worse.

Yes, but perhaps it is best that people think they are or we might start finding it acceptable to use one.. or two.. or three.. or...

Anyway....

The AI should be able to do anything the Player does, but if the Player has designated the AI to look after the war then the AI should inform the Player if it is about to use it with a `Yes`, `No` pop-up.

I reckon Johan should program that in.

It`s also quite interesting to see how the AI had no qualms in using them. I think real life Generals would`ve had also used them, but they would have not been as quick as the AI (much more thoughtful) and some who may foresee the end result may have even refused.

I hope our governments never put our nuclear weapons under some secret-computer AI control, no matter how smart it might seem.

Don,t like nukes...

That`s healthy. Being suddenly wiped out in the blink of an eye without even knowing how or why can`t be fun. No one should like them and hopefully, we`ll never use them again. Also killing dogs, cats, and every living thing possible in the area just isn`t right.
