A couple of examples:

1) I am a Turkish Beylerbey. I can see that Hungary is riven by civil war so I launch a Kingdom war and win. The rebels (Esztergom, Nyitra, Pecs) became independent with 2-3 counties each. Immediately my liege the Sultan launches a Holy war for Esztergom. Croatia and the HRE join the defence and steamroll over the massively weak Hungarian provinces which had just all been sieged in the last war. It is already -70% warscore by the time the first Turkish troops arrive...

When the war finishes I mop up most of these territories through gradual conquest wars.

The attached save file View attachment 58286 shows the 2nd effort. This time the Sultan has waged Holy war for a single county. He managed to get a 10k stack to Hungary earlier this time but the HRE is now coming to crush him and he will likely lose from here even though he has the most troops in the ledger due to the distance.

2) I lost Sicily in a crusade to the Knights Templar. I got a couple of counties back through de jure wars for my vassal the Emir of Sicily. The Emir then launches Holy war after Holy war each of which gets crushed by the Knights Templar and the Pope. In this case it may be because the Knights Templar had no levies as all provinces were wrong religion/culture. They did have their 7,000 Holy order troops, however.

I think things could be improved to stop so many AI suicide Holy wars if the logic was tweaked to:

Give greater priority to conquest wars (Muslim) and de jure wars (Christian)
Weigh up the distance from the capital to the Holy War target
Look at the strength of any potential same religion defenders and their distance from the Holy War target
