Last night I was playing as the Count of Anjou in 867 start. My goal for now is to take the Duchy of Anjou from its current occupant. Luckily the Duke likes me a lot so I managed to betrothe my heir to his daughter (he has another son so he wouldn't say no by I planned to murder him eventually so the Duchy would pass to his sister and eventually my descendants through my heir).

However the Duke's heir died from an illness and my heir's betrothed became the new heir. Since then the Duke constantly breaks the betrothal and engages her to various other nobles and I have to murder them and betrothe her to my heir again and again and again...

I thought that AI was reluctant to break betrothals. Did that changed with any last patch? I play on 2.5.2.2 version with HIP.

It's strange AI breaks bethrotal, it should just say "no".
Probably the Duke likes you a lot, but he don't want to miss the opportunity of a matrilinear marriage....

From my guess it's all about 'Political Concerns' modifier. At the point of betrothal it could be on like five + blocks or something, and then as time goes it can randomly shrink into five - blocks hence the break.

It's hit or miss with betrothals. The AI's political concerns modifier is both right in terms of my intentions, some of the time, as well as being too much of a negative modifier. Especially in the early game when your dynastic prestige is still low.

I don't even bother anymore. The marriage game requires so much effort for so little reward. Far easier to just play a Pagan and take what castles you want or play a Horde and burn those decadent cities into lovely pastures for Dragon, Sky, Lighting, and Arrow.
