Anyone have tips on how to get a corps level AI to invade parts of Indonesia or anywhere for that matter?

Ive only ever experienced one AI invasion and that was when the USA invaded the West coast of Occupied France. Reasonably easy to defeat. I guess though that you want your AI controlled troops to invade. I do understand reading this site that the AI is not too keen on getting its feet wet. I have always handelled invasions myself, and not left it to the AI

Once when I played Germany I managed to get an army under AI control to invade Norway. Although it took time before it stared, the landing was very cleverly executed.

If I remember it correctly, it helped to allow the AI to reorganize it's units. Plenty of transports seemed to be necessary too.

The easiest way to make the AI invade is to use theatre level AI. Just give enough troops and transports and set it on prepare. When you want to invade, switch to Blitz and soon they will invade. Once tried to do Seelöve this way with good results.

What GUNNM said. I can't speak for other nations but i have often played as Japan and i set ai controll to theater and as long as u supply that theater with what forces it needs the ai will carry out an invasion (not allways right on the provence u set as an objective but close enough) After u give it what it needs eg enough transport, escort ships, troops etc. The ai will take time to organize its forces so u need to be patient (say 2-3 months while it gets ready).

Thanks for your input. I can get the theater to invade but really do not like playing on theater level. I wanted to figure out how to get individual corps level AI to invade.

OK after fiddling with a saved game over and over again last night I think I got it. Playing as Japan and about to invade Indonesia I was really wanting to figure out how to get individual corps XXX level AI to invade certain targets. I got it to work on a regular basis but with many pre-conditions.
Conditions:
1. The corps should only have 3-4 max divisions in it. The AI will not invade if there are 5 LAND units within the corps level hierarchy. It took about a week for the AI to invade with 4 divisions in my 1st Marines Japanese corps. It invaded instantly with 3 divisions in that corps. So I am concluding that 3 LAND divisions in the corps level is optimal for AI invasion. Note: you can have one battle fleet and one transport fleet under the corps level command. If you place one battle fleet and 2 transport fleets under the same command the AI will combine the two transport fleets. The AI does not seem act differently with air units.
2. You must have transports that will hold the entire corps. I.E. if you have 4 brigades divisions with 4 divisions and your HQ is also brigade to the max you need enough transports that will hold the entire corps, including the HQ, in one pickup and drop off.
3. The destination for your invasion should not be connected by land. My marine corps of 3 marine divisions invaded Singapore from Saigon instantly. I tried again when bringing Siam into the alliance and they went the long road through Siam.
4. For the fastest results set AI to blitz, naval/air offensive.
5. Make sure your transport fleet has a range of 3000 kilometers. This is really important, even if the AI can reach invasions spots with a 1500km transport fleet it will shy away from it.
6. I had my armies attached up to army group level. The invasions seemed to bug out sometimes when attached to theater level. They worked every time when my army group was not attached to theater level.

Observations:
The HQ's will take their time getting to the destination but will eventually make it there. Planes, ships, ect... will also start to re base toward your new objectives given some time.

I suppose it goes without saying that the Transport fleet must also be attached to the corps command, so is then 3 divisions of Marines + the Transports under the corps command, or 2 divisions of Marines + the Transport fleet?

I also concur that this is awesome research! Or as Carl might say, I con-quer.

Follow-up question as I usually play land-locked countries or minors with no naval power: how do you check the range of your ships?

Yes you have to attach your transport fleet and any other additions to the corps command. For my invasion of Singapore from Saigon I had under my 1st Imperial Marines Corps attached; 3 marine division, 1 bomber squadron (2 tactical bombers), 1 naval bomber squadron (2 naval bombers), 1 transport fleet (1 type 3 heavy cruiser, 3 type 3 destroyers, 4 transports), and one battle fleet (2 carriers, 4 light cruisers). Within the first week my 1st Imperial Marines Corps conquered all of the Singapore peninsula and all units attached to it re based to Singapore. All of this done by naval invasion. I then erased my old objectives and gave the Marines a new objective of Java. Within a week the same results showed true. The entire 1st Imperial Marine Corps attack force was based in Java and the Islands was secure.

Big note here for you guys. If you place one battle fleet and one transport fleet under corps level AI control it will keep them separate. If you place one battle fleet and 2 transport fleets it will combine the 2 transport fleets into one. So I advise just make one transport fleet and or one battle fleet.

Using this technique I am able to simulate island hopping advances with corps level AI control. I am finding it quite fun to play this way.

There are two things to look at. You will see the range of your fleet when you select and look in the middle of the icon information panel. While you have the fleet selected move your mouse over a ocean tile on the map and a little information panel will show how far that ocean panel is compared to your fleet.

Doesn't this add up to seven units under the corps command? I thought five was the limit... or do planes and ships not count against this limit?

Planes and naval units do not count. Only land units. Like I said though the AI looks at fleets 3 different ways. Sub, battle, and transport fleets. So if you have 2 of the same type of fleets under one command the AI will combine them for some reason.
