I'm playing the USSR from 1936 with HOI2 v. 1.03a and was surprised to discover that Hitler pulled off Sealion in 1941. I wasn't paying any attention to the UK and was astonished to discover the British Isles (save Northern Ireland) in grey, not red, on the political map.

When the Germans launched Barbarossa in June 1942, the Kriegsmarine sailed two carriers up the Baltic to Leningrad and wrought havoc on the battleship fleet with which I had expected to rule those waters. (Though, my courageous TAC air eventually made one of them into an oil slick.) I see now that they also possess three BBs from the cheat screen on the statistics tab.

I'm impressed that AI Germany held off the RN long enough to land enough troops to overrun nearly all of Great Britain because I struggled mightily to accomplish the same when I played as Germany. Just curious to know if this happens often. And if so, is there a presumably rare event that fires to allow this, or was the British AI criminally incompetent by, say, sending the entire fleet to defend Singapore?

It happens from time to time - mostly because the German AI got lucky.

It's bad news for you, though, as the German Sealion AI (which it apparently switched to after the fall of France - as evidenced by all their carriers and BB's) focusses on naval assets, and will thus not have the army to pose a fun challenge. They might not even attack you at all, even.

And yes, the AI has a small chance of chosing "Britain first" after the fall of France, which will make them focus on Sea Lion and thus neglect the great eastern war. For a human USSR this is bad news as the game will be boring, but then it's boring anyway as the USSR because of their superior industry and manpower...

There is a chance (IIRC, its actually suprisingly high, 20% (More then the chance of BP firing per week)) that the German AI will try, its not always a success, but it does happen here and there.

Of course, I only ever find it happening when playing as Australia or something, never happens when I'm Axis :p
