Started off my first game as one of the tribes in Europe. (Yeah I know its hard but I appeciate a challenge. ; ) ) and started using the adapt or perish event to increase my civilisation to get ahead of my rivals in terms of research and get one over them overall.

Finally hit the magic 50 after about 15 - 20 years and branched out and colinised a province or two around me turning me into a milatry republic. Awesome, I thought - Now i can turn my attention to capturing a few people around me as I leveled up to 1 in each of my research and got a few unlockables.

Firing up dimplomacy i checked out the tribes around me and i had a bit of a
= o moment as I saw they were also level 1 or in some cases 2. If they played by the same rules as me, and havnt expanded (Or not used adapt and perish because i know it cuts your research to near zero if you 'honour ancestors) surely they'd be behind in reseach as well?

If you didn't use adapt or perish at all, how did you expand? Without this new event reaching 50 civ for any of the tribes takes much longer than 15-20 years, as I believe they all start at around 40.

I don't think the AI has any advantages in research but those tribes might have had higher finese researchers which could affect their levels. However in those European tribes it really doesn't matter early in the game. If you have two or three provinces under your control you have much more manpower and money at your disposal then any of the other tibes in the area. Simply build up Armies that can overwelm them and start steamrolling your way through the tibes. Just be mindful of what alliances they have so that you don't end up getting hammered by their friends.

Colonial expansion slows down research so that might be a reason. How many citizens do they have compared to you?
