just wanna confirm here this isnt just a me thing. im already having problems with every ai dynasty dying out super hard bc they just arent getting married, thats still not fixed for me, but exacerbating that is the fact that the ai just loves handing their kids out as hostages. ill land a younger son, dude will have a single child, and then IMMEDIATELY send the kid off to his closest neighbour. this is happening with all ai all throughout the playable map, and since hostages arent allowed to marry, thats kind of making the marriage bug so much worse. doesnt seem to matter what their traits are either, everyones head is exploding all the time for some reason and i think its probably because theyre doing this when it doesnt make sense for their character

like dgmw, i do like the hostage system overall even if i would like the situations tab to stop telling me about it, but it seems the ai cant be trusted with it rn. anyone else notice anything like this? is this purely a me problem? confirmation bias or something? im not planning on making a bug report about it or anything but i may just, like, turn it off somehow if it seems to be commonplace, revoke the ais hostage privileges until it learns to behave

They even do this with fellow Vassals of the Realm and their Liege having High Crown Authority or higher.
(I don't know, why they do this, when their Liege has high Crown Authority or higher, because they can not attacked, by fellow Vassals).

And yes, the Devs should finally fix the Bug, that the AI refuses to marry, I have gotten multiple historical Dynasties, who have died out, because of this.

Fun Fact:
They are producing a lot of bastard Childs, but they still refuse to marry their Lover or legimate the Bastards.

Honestly.... I am not seeing AI very willing to dish out important kids. They always willing to give me their lesser children but rare I can grab their heirs or secondary heirs.
They give the Heir only as Hostage, when forced via War, which is good, but secondary Heirs, they are more than willy, to "sell" them as Hostage.

But the Hostage system in general is an good addition to the Game, because I was able to vassalize an Independent Duke, by declaring War for a little County and taking his Heir as my Hostage.
(The county was not that important for me, the Heir was a lot more important).

certainly they seem unwilling to give their primary heir to me, yeah. quite willing to hand them out to some other bozo though. theyre also happier to send off their primary heir if its an exchange hostage situation, which id figure the player engages in much less often

that said, youre right that theyre not doing this nearly so much with their primary heirs, it IS the spares theyre more willing to pass around. female children, for instance. who can no longer get married. which means male children of other rulers cant marry. thus, the marriage bug is exacerbated. and thats not even taking into account how often the spare sons ultimately end up becoming the primary heirs, since the ai loves to die (quintains were the single most lethal development in the medieval world turns out, killed more than the black death could ever dream of)

not to, you know, try to argue out of your position here or anything though. if you havent noticed a problem, thats good, thats good feedback. a lot of players also report the marriage bug having been completely fixed, so itd be handy to know if this is an everyone problem or a some people problem (or, as stated in the op, a just me problem for whatever reason)

I was getting the impression some of these issues are intermittent or only affecting a certain percentage of the playerbase. Because yes, I do feel like, in my games, the AI is behaving relatively normally since the last patch but clearly it isent for some.

I would upvote a bug report on this issue, because I’m seeing a lot of first-sons who are hostages. Maybe they were grandsons when they were handed over, but they’re heirs now. I notice them because I’m searching for good betrothals, and too many otherwise excellent candidates are locked away. (And unlike Rapunzel, they don’t have long braids I can climb up to rescue them…) I use mods, though, and cannot know if some of them are partly to blame.

I’ve also found a few child-heirs wandering so far from home that their parent cannot recall them. These children bear wounds; I’m inclined to believe they ran away from home because of abuse, but that’s just the story I tell myself. It’s really easy to arrange matrimonial marriages with these kids, and steal some very desirable lands from their traditional rulers. (I actually switch characters and use console commands to return the children to a reasonably safe court of their own dynasty, where they have a chance to survive until adulthood.)

I've still not used the hostage mechanic yet. Neighbouring rulers are never threatening enough to trade hostages and I'd prefer my heirs didn't come home with traits like gluttonous or fickle. The constant notifications in the situation tab are annoying. There needs to be a way to customize notifications. It's frustrating right clicking them all away and then they appear again 30 seconds later.

The biggest hostage issue is that the AI can just refuse to return your hostage. I've had betrothals with Grand Weddings end because the AI wouldn't free the would-be-bride. It totally makes sense that the AI could refuse to return a hostage, but they shouldn't be allowed to prevent a marriage.

How would you have a marriage if the bride is being held hostage and and is not allowed to go to the wedding, though?

im with you here but i do have a question, if anyone can answer it. if this happens and the bride cant attend her own grand wedding, does the game at least acknowledge this is what happened? is it at least accounted for that this isnt your fault, or is it just like oops too bad feud time idiot

ive not yet myself been in this position bc im SO careful with grand weddings now as a result of how buggy theyve been. i used to only tick that box at the last second and since they patched out the ability to do that ive straight up just not used them anymore, not unless both parties are already adults and can marry immediately

You can still turn a betrotal into a grand wedding once both party are adult.
