There are some oddities in the AI files.

Anyone know why, for instance, the EU holland.ai file (as far as I can tell there is no EEP holland.ai) includes america in the area list? Why not as continent = { america }? Does it work anyway - i.e. to the Dutch ever colonize on the American continents?

And why are some areas in this list in quotation marks (e.g. "The Cape", "Mascarenes") and others not (e.g. malabar bengal)? Do the quotes have any significance?

Second question:

I have occasionally seen smaller colonial powers colonize outside of their ai file expansion areas - for instance, in my present campaign Venice has just founded the colony Nova Trento in the Adirondacks (skiing at Lago Placido, anyone?).

I take it the AI file expansion areas are not a complete straitjacket, and the AI will colonize outside it's specified areas when the opportunity arises, yes?

The area America is different from the continent America. The area is (more or less) the eastern US coast.

I've seen them colonise there yes. If there's anything available...

The entries in quotation marks are those with more than one word in the name.

FYI, "America" the area is only the coast from Connecticut to Carolina provinces, plus most of the 2nd and 3rd rows of provinces inland from there. "America" the continent covers the entire Western Hemisphere.

Historically there were Swedish and Dutch colonies, which were later turned over to England by various means, in the New York and Delaware areas.
