In my current game I've founded a Federation that has grown quite powerful. Now a FE has declared war on one of our members, and hence we have entered an epic conflict. The problem is, however, that there is no coordination what-so-ever in the war. So instead of a joint attack by multiple fleets that could easily outmatch one of their stacks, every member of the federation attacks one at a time with fleets at best 20% of the power of an enemy fleet and gets beaten to pulp.

I'd like some way for federations to perform more effective joint-ops. Designating a fleet "leader" and have other fleets follow it would be good enough if the behaviour could be easily toggled. Or being able to set a system up as a staging area as well as designating a system as a target to attack.

Currently, despite being more powerful than our enemy, we will not get anywhere because we will never do enough damaged without a combined attack. Eventually I will perhaps have teched up and expanded in power enough to do damage, but I have quite a bit to go before I have 60k+ fleets to match his.

Someday, I hope PDX allows Federations to elect a War Leader, who can in turn "demand" war ships and troops from members. Depending on their ability to match those demands the members of the Federation would be rewarded in influence, relationship and war spoils.

Well, the toggle for allowing allies to follow my fleet was enough for a peace treaty to trigger. As soon as we outmatched one of his fleets in a pitched battle, they sued for peace, cheating us of our coming decisive victory :(

Would have been nice to trample through that empire's planets and hurt him, but sadly there are mandatory protocols for surrenders in Stellaris! Glad that solution worked though, I'm going to keep it in mind if facing similarly tough situations myself.

Strange. I was president, but I never got to say anything. Hostilities just ended and a pop-up showed. Could it be because it was a defensive war belonging to one of my federation members and not me?

Yes. In defensive wars it is the prerogative of the primary defender to set war demands and negotiate peace, not the Federation leader.

Indeed, in Multiplayer it basically boils down to attacking each other federations when the other player is not president because the "follow fleet" button doesn't always work, sometimes the AI takes its fed fleet which may be 1/4 of the total fleet on a suicide run or travel to the other side of the Galaxy for no apparent reason. Which is a sad consequence of a stupid system.

Presidential Rotation doesn't make sense for a complex and Advanced federation.
Imo should be based on federation policy with election where either the number of planets, pops or military strenght counts as votes. Or have it function like the federation in mass effect where the most competent and navy focused nation has basically de facto permament Control of the federation fleet.

But then Federation need to be deeper than just War Alliances...

Perhaps have a higher influence penalty for being in a federation, possibly tied to # of empires in the federation or total planets owned, POPs whatever. But by fulfilling federation demands (or being federation leader) you receive influence gains to offset the influence "maintenance" and maybe even surpassing it.

Also the president rotation is very bad. I feel it (like much in the game) is just a placeholder. I'm sure by the time they introduce the ability to unify federations and enact federation policies you'll be able to decide governing style when negotiating to start one with another empire.
