AI doesn't honor matrilineal betrothals

Twice now playing as the Duchess of Brittany, I've matrilineally betrothed myself to the son of a King (different King each time). The son is third or fourth in line of succession, but the father still allows the betrothal. However, when he comes of age, I get an offer for a normal marriage. If I decline this, and click on the "betrothed can marry" notification, the father refuses the marriage offer, since the son is too high in the line of succession. I can make the betrothal, but I can't follow through.

This is definitely the case. I've experimented with reloading the same game to see why I was refused. When the proposed groom got a 1-star education, the matrilinear marriage was accepted, when he got a 2 or higher star education, it was rejected.
